100 Miles to Nowhere

For anyone who is looking for a ride on June 4th I signed up to participate in thefatcyclist.com's 100 miles to nowhere and I will be starting at 7am at the end of the Eliza Furnace Trail riding 100 miles worth of laps on the trail. I would enjoy some company even if its just for a lap or two. I'll be wearing my Fat Cyclist jersey and hopefully have some family and friends there cheering me on.

Here is the link to why I am riding.

What a great idea! Make sure you 'top' this thread when we get closer to the event date and I'm sure you'll get some company. I'll promise you a few laps, but not at 7am...

Yeah, re-post this closer to the date! This sounds fun, and I for one would rather be outside in June at 7 am than, say, 12 pm.

What is the exact route, out of curiosity? Sounds interesting, and if i am in town during that day i will def. come join for a while..My hometown has a 'river trail' which in total is about 5 miles..And i love riding it, still do.So i enjoy the trails around here, remind me of home in a way.

The plan is to start in at the end of the Eliza Furnace Trail the Greenfield enterance and riding to Grant street as many times as it takes to make 100 miles. I'm sure there will be sometimes when we may take a detour or two during the ride, but the basic route is fairly short and very simple, aside from the current construction.

As nice as the jail trail is for commuting and recreation, you are going to be biking next to a freeway for 6-7 hours. That sounds non-optimal to me. Maybe you could jump across the river downtown, take the Southside trail back, cross again at the hot metal bridge, and head back downtown again? It would be a nice little loop, give you a break from the exhaust and maybe even a little time in the shade.

Alternative route: South Side Trail-->Ft Pitt Bridge-->Pt St Park-->Ohio River Trail out to penitentiary and back. Lots more variety, and each complete there-and-back would be something like 18-20 miles.

[edited to add:]Just a suggestion, for the same reason as dwillen points out.

Have fun, regardless!

Thanks I think I might reconsider the laps I take and as the date gets close I'll post what I am planning.

I wanted to top this post as a reminder that this Saturday I'll doing the 100 miles of nowhere and if anyone wants to join for a few laps that would be fun.

I decided to change the route based on some feedback I got here. Were going to ride on the southside trail starting at the boat launch at the end of 18th street. Each lap will be just under to miles and I think after the 5th lap we'll cross the Hot Metal Bridge and go through the point and ride along the ohio for a lap to break the ride up a little bit.

If anyone wants to join in for the whole thing or even just a lap or 2 well be starting around 7 am

Have fun! I'll be out of town this weekend, so I can't join. :(

I'll try to stop down for a lap. Let us know what your riding/wearing since there will probably be a lot of riders out there on a Saturday.

I'll be wearing a fat cyclist jersey that is black with orange and white accents. My bike is a black and red Fuji Newest 3.0 road bike.

I'll be on a plain carbon Specialized single speed with red rims. Red beard, maybe a Thick Bikes jersey.

Apologies in advance, but I just got my reminder this morning that I am to ride in the South Hills with another friend. If something changes on her end I will let you know, at least I programmed a reminder into my phone. Man, she'd be pissed.

Besides all that I am at home sick and dont know what condition I'll be in for Saturday.

No worries. I was able to talk one of my buddies into riding with me so I wont have to suffer in silence by myself.

I finished my ride this saturday and had a blast. Well until the very end when I just wanted it to be over.

I did a write up of the ride and fatty published it on his website, fatcyclist.com the story may not be at the top of the page but if you scroll down or go to older posts mine is story #11

Nice of you to have stopped by, Marko. It looks like you added some external support/motivation at just the right time.

Congratulations man, good job. Nice write-up.

After briefly reading some of the other inspirational stories, I REALLY feel like a fat lazy lard. This knowledge is not going to change anything, but at least now I know for certain.

Thanks for the comments. Marko definately came along at a good time and is a big reason I finished and finished with a decent time. I'll definitely come out for some rides this summer. I'm looking forward to meeting more people from this board. Cycling is such a great community to be a part of.
