Where?
A new worker owned bike shop....
Wanting to form a co-op.
Buy in with work, or cash.
Different levels of involvement.
Have the space.
Have most of the tools.
24/7 operation/ access.
Non Profit.
Any one interested?
ooo la
This is an interesting idea.
Do you have a model in mind that you're interested in following?
How would it differ from FreeRide or Kraynicks?
Registered 501c3? Insurance?
behind kraynicks? i don't know how i feel about that... hopefully there is another spot you're thinking of.
Perhaps NCBT should contact the guy on craigslist from this thread:

I agree that opening/running a shop behind Kraynick's is not up my alley, unless it is Kraynick's 2.
Y'know what might be handy? A mobile bike tune-up service for all these new downtown/Oakland commuters. I keep seeing my friends show up with
(a) a front derailleur that doesn't work because the cable has come loose
(b) brakes that are too loose
(c) a wheel that has gone out of true and is rubbing ever so slightly on the brake
Personally, my rear spokes are too loose on the non-drive side and the cones need to be tightened a bit, and I just don't get around to it. I'd pay somebody to make that real easy for me.
thats what the guy in lawrenceville wants to do exactly...
The open question is whether you could charge enough to make up for the dead time spent schlepping from place to place. But you wouldn't have to pay rent, so that's something.
@Lyle- that is a great idea for those guys at the rental shop at the beginning of the Jail trail. Charge a premium to fix a bike while folks are at work.
Mick
why don't you just buy Kraynick's? Gerry wants to sell to the right person/people.
He wants something like 350K for his spot.
This is the first step though.
Is this an Idea that people would be interested in?
Any one WANT to do this?
I've been tossing the idea around of roadside service for bicycles. I just don't know if ridership is high enough (yet)-think AAA for bikes. It never got past the initial brainstorming phase, but if you end up going to mobile route, I would be happy to lend some ideas. Though, right now with my current venture, I have little time, and even less money for another venture.
Free Ride did a mobile bike repair shop with awesome teen interns this summer. more stuff like this would be cool. we want to do this again next year, and maybe expand it:

Better World Auto Club has a bicycle roadside assistance plan.
I think AAA in Portland offers it too.
Yeah, but they still have crummy politics. I don't really want to fund AAA's lobbyists.
