abandoned bikes at library

There was a reference to the library bike racks not being as crowded in the good things about winter thread. They would be a lot less crowded if the 3 abandoned bikes were not there on the south rack in front of the main branch.

I am pretty sure they have been there since at least last spring if not longer- how does one proceed from here? I did turn the seat around on the one with a quick release many months ago- may take a wrench to the other two.

Inform the library? Suggest that they may want to tag them for 30 days before removal.....

And then suggest that the bikes be donated somewhere.

"I did turn the seat around on the one with a quick release many months ago..." That's pretty genius indicator. Good thinking!

"did turn the seat around on the one"

Ha - I noticed that one. That powder blue bike has been there forever. I wonder if any are left over from G20.

What two other bikes besides the powder blue one have been abandoned there? I work at the library, can see if they'll do something.

All 3 bikes on the south rack outside the main entrance (where I turned the seat around) have not moved for many many months- maybe a year? I am amazed how slowly they rust, but I guess no salt is involved.

I'll let library people know, thanks.

I reported an abandoned bike to museum security after it remained locked up for well over a year to the racks in the parking garage. this rack also gets very crowded with bikes in the warmer months. i was trying to negotiate its re-appropriation to free ride or kraynicks. at first they told me that they couldnt do anything for a month. so i waited and returned. after that they said it had to be 90 days. i waited and returned. they then said they needed the approval of the supervisor who was not in. i left a message and made multiple follow-up visits, but he was never around. to my knowledge the bike is still locked up in disuse. the thing that was most frustrating to me was that it was in good shape a couple years ago and could have been put to good use.

Library security says they're the city's. I'll call 311 I guess.

davy the one abandoned bike of the two in the parking garage right now looks decent. I may give talking to museum security a shot now. Yay bureaucracy :(

just show up with an angle grinder and tell them you lost the key.

+1 on the angle grinder. I like your style.

Submitted the bikes left on the racks in front of the library to 311 and talked to CMOA security about the 2 left in the parking garage. Security'll get back to me about getting them to Free Ride. Maybe. I hope.

good on ya, jude.

I'm hesitant to cheer the angle grinder option... I'd like people hacking at locks with angle grinders to be seriously questioned, well documented, and looked at uncomfortably closely, as chances are, they won't always be people harvesting abandoned bikes for charities. If the line "I forgot my key" actually works, I'd be really sad. I don't want it to work. Not on my bike.

Angle grinder + Security personnel standing right there = Generally A Good Thing.

Angle grinder - Security = Wotnellziss?

Angle grinder + hi-vis safety vest + hardhat + clipboard = Take whatever you like.

jude, the one im referring to is a small giant mountain bike. i havent been by in a while but i was trying to liberate that bike for some time. hopefully having a second person speaking on the poor bike's behalf will set it free.

Museum garage bikes still there but I think ones in front of library are gone?

2012-02-01 00:55:07

I talked to CMOA Head of Security on the phone today. He said they'll tag the two bikes on the parking garage racks then get in touch with me so I can get them to Freeride when they cut them off. I guess only the blue Cannondale will be useable? Getting them to Freeride sound okay?

Sad-looking Giant still there (in CMOA garage), blue Cannondale in decent shape gone. Got no call from security head about it. Didn't see warning tags on bikes, Giant doesn't have one on it right now. Confused. Don't really feel like following up. Hope someone's getting good use out of the Cannondale.
