Another fatal bike accident (in MD) takes Pittsburgher's life

I was listening to the Pirates game a few minutes ago, and they annouced the death of a Sports and Exhibition Authority board member, Mark Schneider (I think that is the spelling of the last name).

They said he was killed in a bike accident that took place in Maryland.

I presume the news tonight will carry more details.

My condolences go out to his friends and family. RIP, Mark.

Wait a sec, Mark Schneider from Fourth River Development who is also a commissioner of SPC? I've been getting to know him pretty well over the past 5-6 months. This is terrible. I don't know what to say..

Sorry to hear this: my condolences to Mark's family and friends.

Wow. He was a regular on our Sunday ride. His son rode with us a few weeks ago. Sad.

Mark was one of the founders of Pedal Pittsburgh and a huge force in the redevelopment of key sites throughout Pittsburgh. He is also serving on Rich Fitzgerald's transportation team with me and was a huge ally of the bike/ped movement and smart growth. I just can't believe this right now..

Mark has done a lot for the city in a very understated way....playing an integral role of developing Washington's Landing and Summerset at Frick, along with all his work on the North Side/Shore. A big, big loss of a great guy.

Yes, scott. THAT Mark Schneider. I figured the SPC reference would be meaningless to most. Sad news indeed.

He was a Point Breeze resident. Maybe the City would consider making a bike enhancement in his neighborhood in recognition of his decades of service to the City. I'm thinking a Mark Schneider Memorial bike lane on Penn Avenue in Point Breeze might be appropriate....

Well, it sounds like another memorial ride is in order, or perhaps some special acknowledgement at next Sunday's Pedal Pittsburgh ride?

I know it hits extra hard when you know a cyclist personally: so I am feeling for you guys.

I have to say, after reading about all these deaths, I have to wonder about commuting to work via cycle. I think this year might be too dangerous to cycle. I don't know what it is, but this year is different. I have NEVEr encountered so amy aggressive motor vehicle drivers. Not sure what it is? 2012? Bad economy? Don't know? Seems worse than ever!

2012-07-29 21:37:47

@Hcurtis, what if you heard about every person that died in a car? You don't. That's like 40k people a year. Cycling is roughly as dangerous as crossing the street. Last I checked about as many people die in the shower of head injuries.

Drivers may in fact be more aggressive this year, but that's related to the temperature, nothing more.

Very sad. I would like to know more details of the accident if they should become available. A car may not even have been involved. Man, your 50's is sounding like a dangerous age to be a cyclist (gulp).

But again, NOT a helmetless, lightless, fixie ninja hipster that the haters always bemoan.

I don't want to get off track on this thread, but there are too many flaws in your post for me to ignore. 1. more people drive cars, so you can't compare those numbers without the statistic being a per unit. Also, more people shower than cycles. Our numbers are few in comparison and it is much safer to cross the street.

Been a very tough year for cyclists.

Anyway back on track. Sad news and my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

So sad. It sounds like he was a nice guy.

Obit today said he and his son were in Maryland doing a 100 mile charity ride, the Catoctin Challenge. About 15 miles into the ride he lost control of his bike for unknown reasons, and crashed into a mailbox. He was going about 30 mph at the time (and yes, wearing a helmet). He was helicoptered to the the local trauma hospital, but there was nothing they could do.

(Sorry for any inadvertant editing. I judt did not want to hunt down the link to the obit that I just read, and cut and paste it here.)

So no, no car involved, from the sounds of it.

(edited to correct 15 minutes to 15 miles)

@hcurtis This will be my last post on the issue. You don't have any data for how many people ride bikes or how many fatalities or injuries there are. Nor do you have any data to see if there's been an increase or decrease this year vs previous years. What you do have is a bias because via boards like this you hear about every single incident.

I talked to someone who was there at the crash, the obit details are more or less correct.
