I was actually thinking about doing this too. I would think most of the side roads would be pretty low traffic in that area. Yes, a road goes to the top.
Best route from Confluence to Mt Davis
Hi,
I'm going to ride the rails-to-trails from Rockwood to Ohiopyle State Park, but would like to hop over to Mount Davis to climb that mountain. Does anyone already have a safe route mapped that I could follow? I assume you can ride/drive to the top of the mountain?
Thanks!
Darren
I made a map on bikely. I am not exactly sure where the high point is but, this is very close.

Wrong location of Mt. Davis summit.
go here: 39.786111, -79.175833
The access drive doesn't show on bikely, but from igo's post make a right off of Mt. Davis Road and onto South Wolf Rock Road. Travel about 0.6 of a mile on South Wolf Rock Road. The access drive to the summit and the lookout tower is on the left.
Just an FYI
there are some people thinking about putting on a timed event, like a hillclimb time trial type thing, up mt davis this year. Ill post info on the board. It will be followed with group rides.
Thanks everyone. I would interested in the hilly climb event. Keep us posted on that.
In investagating the PA state highpoint I found the MD and WV highpoints are within 100 niles of each other. Interesting challenge to try and hit all three state highpoints in the same day.

That's an awesome idea.
holy crap, i'm not fit enough for that yet but it sounds like something you could totally get a bunch of people to do!
You were probably looking at these web pages too

WV and PA are almost entirely on-road. Looks like MD is probably mostly bikable though it's a trail.
This is what a straight line from Spruce Knob to Mt. Davis looks like. It's 120 miles or so: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/302378
Hey dhd,
Thanks for documenting that bikely route. Do you (or anyone) know off hand if those roads are decent for riding?
Darren
Nope! No idea at all. I've had generally bad to horrible experiences with US and state highways in West Virginia but it might be different up in the national forest areas.
