BICYCLE RENTALS!

Hi, I am new to Pittsburgh and I have seen a TON of people out biking now that the weather has gotten warmer. I currently do not own a bike (saving money to buy one) but really want to get out on the trails on the weekends. Does anyone know of any place to rent a bicycle for a day? I have only found one place and they aren't even open!!

FreeRide sometimes has ridable used bikes in their "library", which you can borrow if you put down a deposit. As far as I know, the system of charging $20 for the deposit for any bike is still in use. I would ask someone there to look over any bike before you ride it - to make sure everything is tightened that should be, brakes work ok, etc.

You get your deposit back when you return the bike, which doesn't have to be same day. Just ask about getting a library bike.

They're open saturday* from 1-5, inside construction junction, http://freeridepgh.org/

*sorry. edited. originally said "tomorrow". For some reason, it's friday in my head.

Hey, yes.. you can borrow a bike from Free Ride for a $20 deposit. We usually let people borrow them for 2 weeks, but sometimes people need them for a little longer and this usually isn't a problem. We're not really a traditional "bike rental" shop, but you may be able to find something that can fit you, so long as all the bikes aren't in use. If you don't want to go out of your way, you should call first to see if we have any library bikes available for loan. Call when we're open though - we're not the best at checking messages.

We'll be open on days in addition to Saturdays starting this coming week. Check the website for hours: http://freeridepgh.org/

It sounds like you tried to go to Golden Triangle.. it says on their website that hours for 2010 will be coming soon. Hopefully it won't be that much longer!

I think they are an offshoot of Golden Triangle.

Thanks all! Do you know the name of the place that rents in the SS Works? I thought there was one down there but wasn't too sure.

its a tent that golden triangle sets up in front of the cheesecake factory. it probably wont open until the main shop at the head of the jail trail opens though.

It might be worth your while to call/email Golden Triangle Bike Rental. They say they're reopening in March and I can't imagine them waiting much longer when the weather is this nice.

There is a bike rental opening at SSW? That's awesome. I love when that corner near the Hot Metal Bridge almost reaches critical mass. So good.

Also, if you're just looking to tool around the trails, Friends of the Riverfront has a free bike share program. you sign up in their office, they give you a key fob, then you can go to any of the lockers and check out a bike. they have lockers near the terminal building in the south side, and near the heinz lofts in the northside. the bikes are really only good for riding around the trails and downtown as they are fairly heavy beach cruisers.
