Wow, wide clear shoulder, good sightlines, sunny day, helmet-wearing cyclist.

I'm always worried that's going to be my fate whenever I cross the Glenwood bridge

Sad. Epic comments to the article.

The usual stupid comments interspersed with occasional snippets of reason.

Again, more helmet cams. After seeing just how good the video can be, I think everyone should have two, one pointed forward, the other back, and probably the rear-facing one is more important in establishing what happened in any incident.

That's pretty marginal ... most incidents develop in front of you - though on the other hand, you tend to have a pretty good eyewitness version of what happens in front of you.

If you crash with a helmet cam on, I would not be surprised if the video is lost -- at least the last few seconds, if not the whole thing. These devices buffer data internally and only write to the SD card at periodic intervals. Also, if the SD card is not treated properly by the on-camera software, the underlying format may be corrupted.

I think the helmet cams are most well suited as documentation for events in which the user does not crash hard.

I am contemplating a video project in the East End as a response to my run-in with the 61B last week and may be able to subsidize some helmet cams for people who ride Forbes Avenue at least twice a day and are willing to help.

@stu ...I think everyone should have two, one pointed forward, the other back...

Just curious- do you really ride with two video cameras?

I got two cameras to work on some instructional video, and I've been riding with them routinely just to get the hang of what works and what doesn't, and collect some footage. I figure sooner or later something interesting will happen worth noting. One camera alone just doesn't give you the whole sense of what is going on.

So, yeah, I do ride with two video cameras, particularly since a couple of recent assaults by PAT bus drivers.

I ride Forbes between Regent Square and Squirrel Hill 2-3 days a week, and I got a helmet cam for Father's Day. Haven't used it yet, but I've been looking for an excuse. I'd be happy to provide any footage you want. But I haven't had any real problems with buses there.

And 2 points on his license. Commentary is typical bike vs. car.

Underlines the necessity to make cell phone use an infraction as well too. Glad they looked at that in this case, and brought it a bit more into the media attention.

Still a shame.
