bike locks and stuff

my new bike is hopefully going to be done relatively soon so I've started looking into locks.

Anyone have the new york kryptonite locks? any opinions on them?

also, has anyone used the anti-theft skewers? I'm curious about how easy the specialized lock/wrench thing works.

any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Iron City sells some brand of anti theft skewers, they work well but are annoying in that if you aren't carrying the special wrench with you and you get a flat you're screwed... not worth it in my opinion, just lock your wheels... but if you're sold on it go for it.

i think any ulock is good for pgh... i don't think i've ever heard of a ulock getting broken here... if you want to spend the extra money go for it though. i use a kryptonite lock and chain.

I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with any decent u-lock here.

That Avenir lock looks the same as OnGuard ones, which work fine.

I've had an OnGuard Bulldog Mini from Iron City for the last couple of years & it's done fine. It fits right in my jeans pocket, too.

I had a pretty crappy bike that I got for free when I first started avidly biking. I had it for about a year and just used a cable & lock during that time. I upgraded to a new bike in the early part of last summer only to have it stolen a week later while at work (at 8:30 in the morning!!). Since that time, I bought myself a U-lock from treck in Eastside plaza, which worked great. It came with an option to lock up the wheels with a cable, too, but I can't say I ever used it.

I also use the onguard bulldog mini with a cable. Nice and small for a ulock, but I can still fit it around the seattube, back wheel, and whatever im locking too, then just cable the front wheel. if you have a really nice saddle, I might recommend a small cable for that too.

amazon has the bulldog mini with a cable for 22, I think just the lock itself runs about 30 locally.

The New York locks are overkill here. I have a New York Mini U that I hardly ever use, even when I'm in NYC or Philly it tends to be a bit huge for my tastes.

I have a bulldog mini that I typically use in almost all situations then a cable lock that I will run through my wheels and saddle when I am going it's going to be locked up for a longer time.

You can't go wrong with the combo that netviln posted.

I also use a mini-u and cable combo for what it's worth. It's what I recommend to everyone who will listen.

I have an OnGuard Pitbull Mini that I use for most of my locking. I also have a few bigger Kryptonite locks and a OnGuard cable lock, and a few cables.

I like the On Guard locks a lot. The Pitbull mini seems to be a little more precise than the regular mini (and has a rotary lock cover), but for the price and weight difference, it probably isn't worth it.

Onguard Mastiff chain + cable, plus anti theft skewers & seatpost collar. Works for me.

For NYC, cover your frame in stickers or electrical tape, never clean it, and duct tape a plastic bag over your seat. That should reduce your security needs.
