Bike Lottery for PGH kids

Passing this along, sent from my local neighborhood organization (Connect Greenfield). Sounds pretty cool. Maybe someone on this board works with kids and could get them involved.

Bike Lottery!

The engineering firm CH2MHILL has reached out to the Mayor's Office and would like to coordinate bicycle give-aways to children in the City of Pittsburgh ages 3-12 years old. We would like a list of names for kids who would be interested in receiving a free bicycle and helmet through this give-away. All kids who live in the City of Pittsburgh are welcome to submit their name for the give-away and the Mayor's Office will be conducting a lottery to award the kids with their bikes at an event--the date is yet to be determined.

We would need the following information sent to us by April 23, 2010:

Name

Age

Address

Phone Number

Contact Stephen.zumbrun@city.pittsburgh.pa.us for further information.

Great idea, but several organizations are alreay doing it. Kraynick fixes up over a hundred bikes a year for a program run by the City of Pittsburgh Police. I think they do giveaways in June and in December.

Groups outside the City do it too. Rapp's in Butler was doing it there for many years (probably still does.)

And, just as general information, funding for BIKE HELMETS is really hard to come by. Bikes are relatively much easier to have donated, etc.

The contact for the City of Pittsburgh's EXISTING bicycle giveaway program is Officer Melissa Gutch.

Good to know there are already programs in place. I don't have any affiliation with this program, just passing along info. I very much doubt that one more group giving away bikes is a bad thing, or make the existing programs any less impressive. The announcement did mention the bikes came with a helmet.
