Today as yesterday, I motorcycled. Yesterday, I didn't use the rain gear, and managed to dodge the serious rain. Today I donned the rain gear and was glad I did. The early plan, both yesterday and today, was to bicycle in. The heaviness of the rain, as well as the need to minimize travel time, made the difference. This morning on the HOV lane, I passed over 230 cars stuck on I-279. Yesterday it was more like 150.

Wait, don't we bike everyday despite the weather?

I take the bus w/bike when it's rainy... but bike home. It's not bad biking in the rain. But it sounds like coming in from the south or west was risky no matter how you were traveling. My favorite photo from Streets Run Road:

I just have to say I am SO GRATEFUL for the bus rack program. I was halfway down Greenfield Ave about 45 minutes ago, thought I'd make it downtown no problem. Then I saw the huge black clouds in that direction. Traffic on Greenfield was completely stopped and luckily a 53L was right next to me. The driver let me get on and I had a very dry and more importantly safe ride in. I would have been in real trouble otherwise.

I biked to work, got wet, but got here right before the heaviest rain. Now I'm sitting here fretting about the unknown state of my basement. Hopefully the afternoon will be more forgiving.

I hung about and played guitar for a bit before I bicycled in. I was lucky and wasn't rained on.

I was only worried about the lightening for some reason. Was totally prepared to ride in but had to carry a bunch of heavy books that would've bent my weld rack, so had husband drive me and the bike in. I'll be biking home. One caveat, I'm riding Sq Hill to Oakland, so didn't really have to deal with flooding. If I was in a potential flooding area, I probably would've called in and waited it out. Second caveat, I choose my house location and my work location based on ease of biking, knowing I would be commuting. So the fact that I can avoid most messes regardless of weather is also because I consciously choose locations that are very close and easily bikeable.

@sarapgh2 I also choose the location of my house and work to commute by bike easier. I choose the east end because at the time it seemed to have the most "cycling safe" streets, and easy access to everywhere.

Mayor said to let employees go early because of the road conditions. I wonder if I can convince my boss the EFT is in the river....

Did the same. Best decision. I can ride every day because of this.

Probably so he could justify not 'working' today either.

The one time I got a job that I couldn't walk to, I moved a few months later so I could.

There were some flash floods in Oakland some 3 years back. 3+ ft of water at Forbes and Margaret Morrison. You wouldn't think it's a flood zone, but water still manages to collect in the valleys between the hills. Be safe!

Heavy heavy weather coming thru Robinson right now, will be in town in a few minutes. If youre out, get somewhere in.

Was just rolling out the door for some hill repeats when the wind whipped up. Looking pretty sketchy here in Oakland.

I don't think I've ever ridden home as fast as I did today, the whole time thinking "I should have left 5 minutes earlier". I was getting pelted with small branches on Beechwood, and was literally almost blown over once.

rode in through the second wave of storm this morning. it was WONDERFUL. summer rain is highly under-rated for riding in. i just wore my water shoes and had a change of clothes and towel for the office. on the way home stef and i waited out the worst of it when the front came through. we were having dinner at otb anyway so it wasn't a big deal. once the front passed we just rode home in the light rain. seriously one of the nicest commutes i've had in ages.

I was very cold riding in 67 degree weather for a bit at the start. It is sad that it has been so balls hot and humid that 67 and light rain felt cold. I do love riding in summer storms. I am satisfied when I see traffic backed up as I ride the jail trail.
