This thread reminds me of a few years ago when I found this bikey lady/feminist bike zine at the Carnegie Library and sat on the floor reading it for like EVER. It's a really nice memory.

I'm stoked that all the bike zines will be organized in their own section.

@swalfort Not at this time, and I don't see them in the catalog at the moment so they can't be requested to come here. However, we might look into adding some subscriptions for next year. We should at least get Urban Velo and the other local publications downtown.

I just dropped off a copy of each available back issue of Urban Velo at the Carnegie branch this afternoon. And a handful of other bike zines I had around, figured people might like them.

On another note, I'm amazed at home many zines are really out there. Over the years I've put together a bit of a collection and must have 30 or 40 different titles and around 100 'zines.

If there is one you like you should ask the library! I am not sure how they get copies of magazines or how the subscription would go. I for one would be cool with subscribing and giving it to the library for certain mags lots of people would like. I mean, what do you do with them after you read them?

As far as I know you cant check zines out---so I am not sure they are interlibrary loan, which sort of stinks.

I also heard that a bunch of a certain board poster's old BMX zines are also there.

The zines don't circulate right now. It's a browsing collection. They're not in the catalog, they're in LibraryThing. Better I think because it's quicker processing and you can put a bunch of weirdo tags on them.

Hey all. I'm the zine librarian at CLP Oakland. Found this threat - thanks Caitlin lady for letting people know about the bike-related zines!

We now have both Urban Velo and Bicycle Times in the magazine section on the First Floor.

We have older issues of Urban Velo in the Bikes section of the zine collection. We also have a bunch of other bike-related zines and are getting more. Elly Blue just sent 4 of her newish ones, we'll be getting Boneshaker, have Dames on Frames, Da Groove, Chainbreaker +

We have a decent selection of bike repair/advocacy/commuting books but Erok got me a list and we'll be adding some titles.

This is all great news! I love it. I wish there was a greater selection downtown, but that's just my selfishness showing through!

Doubt they can start zine collection downtown but is it more bike-related books that you'd like to see there,too? If so I can pass on the info and a book list.

Slightly OT -

There is a coffee shop on Church Street in Ben Avon (this is the same as Lincoln Avenue in Bellevue, but it changes names at the border of Avalon and Ben Avon). The coffee shop is called The Fire Escape, as it is located immediately next door to the VFD. They have a nice collection of bike related reading material, including Urban Velo and Dirt Rag in their bookcases. I occasionally add to it when I stop by.

I think they have some connection to the guy who started the Bike Museum in Chateau, but I don't know the exact relationship. (I probably should).

Anyway, just wanted to give them a shout out for being a mostly bike friendly business, and having good reading material available. Stop by if you pass through the neighborhood. I think they are open 7-7 during the week, I can't recall their weekend hours, but they close earlier than I would like on most days.

@ Swalfoort - I pass by that place all of the time and have never stopped (usually I'm too deep in prayer that I'm not too tired that I will embarass myself riding up Roosevelt...); this gives me a reason to make a point of it.

@ Swalfoort- Craig, the bike museum founder, is from bellevue. i believe his original museum and shop was in his garage up that way.

I wish we could get Bikeconomics to all politicians everywhere.

It's actually -Bikenomics: How Bicycling Will Save The Economy (If We Let It). The other Elly Blue zine that she donated is Taking the Lane #5: Our Bodies, Our Bikes. Evan Schneider also donated a few copies of Boneshaker and one is now in the zine collection.
