biking to Oakdale from Mt Washington/Dormont area

I'll be moving to Pgh at the end of Feb to start my new job in Oakdale. I'll be looking to rent an apartment and would like to bike to work. I'm looking at Carnegie, Bridgeville, MT Leb, Mt Washington, and Dormont. What would the bike commute be like from closer to the city in Dormont or Mt Washington? How about from Mt Lebo? I can take the Panhandle trail for a few miles but what are the streets like traffic-wise and is it a doable commute?

thanks!

South Hills streets are pretty rough for biking unfortunately. West Liberty is not too fun. But there are def. ways to get around. Just hope you like hills :)

Nah, totally doable. That's a very regular ride for me. You can either go up Noblestown which is flat but periodically kinda trafficy. Or you can go Collier/Hilltop and get there. That's a really hilly route but less traffic.

The Panhandle Trail is also a really nice way to get there, assuming the trail is dry.

It's doable from Bridgeville too although I'd go a different way. Not too hard though.

I live in Mt Lebo. Drop me a line if you have questions or need help. csmayhew at gmail/com

Thanks for the replies guys!! I am used to hills since I live in New Hampshire at the moment. don't care for them at all but am used to them. Just wondered if the commute would be reasonably safe and reasonably pleasant scenery-wise.

I live on Mt Washington and love it. You have to like the climb home (or ride the incline)....but you can get just about anywhere fairly quick. Some areas of the Mt. are not so trendy and rough. Send me a PM if you have any questions.

Since I already emailed her this I thought I'd mention it. Also, you could get to Noblestown pretty easy from Mt. Wash. Oakdale would be like an hour from there? 45mins?

From my house, riding hard it takes me 36 mins to get to Oakdale. I live at 743 Shady Dr E.

Washington Rd

Scrubgrass

From there you can either take 50 north into Carnegie and then get on Noblestown or just go up and over Hilltop. Via Hilltop I can do it in 36 mins as I mentioned.

I've done the Panhandle a lot too and it's super rad. No traffic, totally flat. It's only a summer option as it sucks in the winter when it's wet.

The roads should be reasonably clear. You're on secondary roads so they should be cleared and see traffic but not be main highways.

If you lived in Bridgeville it would basically be Presto Sygan to Thom's Run Rd. A bit of traffic (no idea why, it's a backroad) and reasonably flat as PGH goes.

Yeah from MT wash, down greenleaf and out

noblestown. That would be a nice ride to

do everyday.

You buying a house? I know a real estate agent. (me)

thanks for the info steevo. Yep, we'll be buying a house, probably going to rent for a little while first to check out the area/commute/feel etc and then decide on best location for us. keep in touch
