Boston bike lanes removed overnight

here's a blog post about some bike lane pushback. http://bostonbiker.org/2010/12/06/charlestown-removing-bike-lanes/

what I find odd about it is that evidently there was a neighborhood council meeting where they decided to remove them and the lanes were being scraped off that night. how is that even possible?? seems like they must have already been scheduled to do the work.

Wow. Well, in Pittsburgh, the bike lanes delete themselves. Fortunately, it takes about as long for them to fade as it does to get the city to paint them in the first place.

I know, I was thinking that if they really didn't want them they should just wait out the winter and see if that doesn't solve the "problem" anyway. what a waste of $$

Charlestown was nearly the strongest supporter of Mayor Menino's opponent Michael Flaherty in the 2009 elections (second only to Southie, of which neighborhood Flaherty was a native). They were a staunch supporter of Scott Brown (remember, the Cosmo centerfold who ran for Ted Kennedy's vacated seat, on a platform to block "Obamacare") and of the Republican challenger to the Democratic incumbent in this years gubernatorial race.

This is partly a matter of the culture wars, but I think it's more a matter of flipping the bird to Menino.
