Calling on the Biking community! Research Help!

Hi everyone. I am a design student/avid biker at Carnegie Mellon University here in Pittsburgh. We're working on a design research project involving bicycle helmets and we'd really appreciate it if you would take a few seconds to complete a quick survey for us.

Your input would really help! Thank you.

Question 5 wouldn't let me choose multiple answers. It went through when I selected one, but I really wanted to select more.

Yea, if you hit two responses to a question, the survey just sits there when you hit "done"

I wanted two options to that question as well.

I also wanted a different third option to the road vs. sidewalk question. The question basically asks whether you prefer to ride on the road or on the sidewalk. The third option is "either." I have no objection to riding on the sidewalk in many cases, but recognize that it is illegal in some cases, and not a preferred option in other cases. I wish the third option (or a fourth option) was something on the order of "it depends" or the question would allow me to check both roads AND sidewalks, but not either. To me "either" implies equal, and my preference is clearly NOT equal.

I didn't know gender was such a complicated question.

I wear a helmet around 95% of the time. Some times I am lazy or forgetful.

The commuting/recreation/sport question should also be multiple-choices, I think. I definitely commute and bike for fun, and I know folks who do all 3.

I think there is probably a healthy majority that do all 3.

Does your survey consider the MUP road, or sidewalk?

We understand that people often classify themselves as more than one type of biker. I myself would fall under two of those categories, but we needed to keep it to a single answer for the sake of our data. If you could choose the one you most associate with we would greatly appreciate it. Also anytime you are not physically separated from cars ie. a curb or such would be considered the road. Thanks to all so far.

Question 5 literally voids the rest of the survey.

If I answer exercise rider then I wear the helmet the whole time i am exercising.

However if I answer commuter, I have a commuting helmet that I lock up with my bike.

You go to CMU, figure out how to merge data from a venn diagram or whatever.

I don't mean to be too harsh, but I think the fact that they are using an internet message board for their research says it all. Hardly a valid sample of bicyclists.

also...isn't a biker a motorcycle rider and a person who rides a bicycle, "a cyclist" or a bicyclist?....just a side comment.

I like to use 'biker' for mountain bike riders and 'cyclist' for roadies.

Ha! "mountain cyclist" - sounds kinda funny, doesn't it?

"mountain bicyclist"

"alpine (bi)cyclist"

"off road (bi)cyclist"

For q 5: I just hit the back button - no sense in submitting data if it won't take true answers.
