Careful out there

Please stay hydrated. Know where the water fountains are on your route. Take it easy if you have asthma.

You can get into a lot of trouble with the heat and humidity outside. I had a hard time breathing yesterday and I took climbs painfully slow. My jersey was still wet with sweat on the PM commute, because i sweat so much 12 hours earlier on the way in. Gross stuff. I noticed that the misting station was on at the bike rental place on the jail trail.

Thanks for the advice and reminding me about the mist station. I left at 6am trying to ride in the morning cool air and it was still incredibly hot.

Were you riding through the Strip/Lawrenceville last night around 10ish?

Even a misting station will be of limited help when it's 90% humidity.

If you can, stop occasionally, take off your helmet, and soak your head, neck, and shoulders. You know how in the winter they tell you that you lose xx% of your body heat through your head? Use that.

I walked through Gateway Plaza this morning, shaded by 60 foot oak trees, softened light, the fountain, there was a pleasant breeze blowing, it was paradise. We need less asphalt, more trees. Work toward that.

panther hollow is cooler than most places, as are streets that go past garages. I did have to dump a bunch of water on my head yesterday, but it dried up pretty quickly.

Constant hydration and quality food goes a long way. Skip the potato chips for lunch.

Im outside all day and I stay cool by wearing long pants and long sleeves. Counterintuitive, but it works.

I survived this week in my trusty cool and comfortable spandex cycling kits.

Pretty damn hot. Hardest commute I've had in recent memory.

sloaps - hiding skin from the sun in the heat makes sense. For two years I wore what amounts to a giant ankle length mumu over a long skirt in self defence against sub-saharan heat/sun. when I biked I just swapped the skirt for pants (but kept the ankle length mumu top). Mumus are highly practical clothing, unisex if worn over pants, I wish they were considered stylish.

This weather makes me slow down through neighborhood sprinklers and ask for a spray from carwashers.

Thought to myself as I rode into work at about 11 today: "I've had showers that were not this humid."

mick
2011-07-21 21:40:27

Wow, almost midnight and it's still 85.

I haven't encountered weather cold enough to keep me from riding but I really don't like the heat - 70 is "kinda hot" in my book.

My hat is off to everyone who was hardcore enough to ride today, I wimped out and took the scooter - especially since I had to leave work early and didn't want to get completely sweaty.

Salty, I was thinking that today while I was going to work "If it were cold I could just add layers, nothing I can do about this" While I was cycling I decently regretted not driving. Got a headache (can't remember the last time that happened) and the hills seemed a lot harder.

bike's in the shop, and I'm kind of glad I'm taking the bus every day.

I've been standing under the cold shower in my clothes to cool off before long walks, and I'm still dry in less than half an hour.

Hmmm I am considering driving today. It may be too dangerous to commute on two wheels, especially with 40 lbs of stuff for work on my bike.I DO have an ultra low emissions car, so I don't feel as bad about it. Just wondering if the flock ride is a good idea, too. I guess it is slow....

I know those bank thermometers aren't always accurate, but the news is showing one on the north side saying 88 degrees at 4:30am. The official temp at the airport is 82. Gross.

stefb
2011-07-22 08:46:45

I'm still going to the Flock ride, and I've been carrying several water bottles while I ride I put them in the freezer to get them half frozen. One problem I do have is I think the heat is affecting drivers without air in their cars, the seem to be driving a little "spaced out".

marvelousm3
2011-07-22 10:14:24

Waking up at 5:30 this morning, it was still 85 in the house and 80 outside. Still managed to make it the 10 miles into town at 7:30ish. Let's see how the 10 miles back out at 10 works. Then I'll bike in for Flock at 5ish. I suppose I could bus, but I'll try the bike just to say I did (try). I will likely bus home.

stuinmccandless
2011-07-22 13:35:29

I'm glad other people felt their ride was more difficult today and yesterday. I didn't realize how hot it was until I got to work soaked like I just got out of a pool. I didn't remember to fill my waterbottle this morning so it was a tough ride.

dvilliotti
2011-07-22 14:09:18

Im determined not to drive or bus today but the heat is overwhelming. I still am doing the flock ride. Even my feet are hot

I left the library on Smithfield St at 10, then rolled through the South Side looking for the current tag before heading home via Hot Metal, Oakland, 40SB & Millvale. I thought I was well hydrated, but faded fast in the last two miles. Just friggin' hot. Travel time 2h40m.

stuinmccandless
2011-07-22 17:06:37

Weather says it feels like 104'.

Starting to seem like a good evening to curl up in my cool basement in the dark, drink, and crank up some Joy Division. Just that kind of evening.

edmonds59
2011-07-22 17:25:56

I'm gonna walk the dog to a nearby creek and we're going to soak till we're good and pruny, then soak some more. Assuming the water hasn't boiled off. I can't flock in this heat, even in a mumu.

ejwme
2011-07-22 17:40:58

maybe I'm just dumb but it doesn't seem that terrible for 5-7 mile jaunts here or there despite being drenched with sweat.

dmtroyer

I'm feeling lucky.

I'm in Canada, wearing a wool jersey.

Sorry bout ya heat.

eric
2011-07-22 18:06:29

@dmtroyer I did 22 miles yesterday half in the morning and half in the evening.

Edgewood->Mt Wash and back. Including up Greenfield Ave around 5PM.

It's not awful if you have experience w/ hot weather cycling. You keep your wits about you and take it easy, hydrate excessively. Also ice water in the bottles helps.

That being said, I'm not doing FoC tonight... just a little too hot for that extra 10-15 miles.

myddrin
2011-07-22 18:32:03

I was hoping to Flock, but I'm out too. I'm having a hard time breathing with the air quality even not exerting myself. I think I've used my inhaler more the past 2 days than I usually do in 2+ weeks.

tabby
2011-07-22 18:34:56

I had hoped to Flock, but I can't drink when it is this hot, and ending up at the Brewery after a really hot ride would make a cold one too appealing. I'm gonna pass on the Flock tonight.

swalfoort

I'm planning to go. Slowly.

Don't drop out, then you cant brag about surviving the 100 degree flock.

marvelousm3
2011-07-22 19:20:25

If I can snag the bus pass from my son, I might bus there. From 5 to 6 would be peak heat. After 6 it will start cooling off just a bit, so the ride might be fairly do-able, even if getting there would be rough.

stuinmccandless
2011-07-22 19:29:01

Eric - we just got back from Vancouver Island, where it was 65 and breezy beautiful for a whole week (even the rain was mild mannered and polite). Didn't get above 70. Last night was heat shock. Normally heat doesn't throw me, but this time... ugh.

ejwme
2011-07-22 19:39:09

come on! don't you guys know that if you just go faster, the breeze keeps you cool?

hiddenvariable
2011-07-22 19:45:28

I just got home from work. We got out early because they shut off some of the power units to conserve energy (sounded like it was required to save the grid from blacking out). I was having a tough time breathing with how muggy it was and I wanted to play it safe so I called my wife to pick me up. I kept having visions of me trying to make it up Penn avenue from Wilkinsburg and just keeling over half way.

dvilliotti
2011-07-22 19:51:25

Am I the only one that likes this? Realized on my way to work this morning that I was in a couple gears higher than normal going up Saxonburg.

If you do not share this love, tell yourself that it's actually easier to travel through hot, humid air, as it's less dense (although it feels like swimming sometimes). This guy said so (see point #9): http://www.icebike.org/Articles/SlowerWinter.htm

kbrooks
2011-07-22 21:28:35

Yeah, but it's hottest when going up hills where the air resistance is negligible because the cyclist is already moving so slow

sgtjonson
2011-07-22 23:03:01

I biked all week except for Wednesday, and I didnt think it was that bad -just hotter than usual. Going up Hill on Penn Avenue I just had to pace myself more so I didn't overheated, but other than that, survived ok. Maybe is my genes, but I've kinda-of enjoyed the heat! Makes me feel alive! :)
