Casual cycling shoe options

I am looking for a few more options before choosing a shoe to replace the Keen Newport sandals I used for the past two years.

Keen makes a few, I especially like the Coronado Cruiser but it looks like they aren't carrying them anymore.

We know Chrome makes some shoes but I don't love the style.

Are there any other options for cycling shoes that wouldn't look ridiculous around the office? SPD and flat are both an option, but I am looking for a cycling specific shoe for the stiffer sole.

Merrell has introduced some new ladies shoes that are supposed to be (casual) cycling friendly.

Haha when I first read Pseudacris's post It looked like "Marcel has introduced some new ladies shoes...."

I've been wearing the DZR concubines daily for about a year, they're very comfortable and have held up pretty well. I did have to shoegoo the sole back on one recently (not the part the cleat is attached to).

I'm certainly not used to getting complements about my fashion sense but I've had more positive comments about these shoes than all other pieces of clothing I've ever worn, combined. Most people (including cyclists) are surprised to see they're cycling shoes.

Highly recommended.

@salty is the cleat completely recessed? does it grind on the sidewalk?

DZR does make some nice looking shoes.

I'm wearing a pair of Keen Austins right now...fine for walking about without noticeable grinding.

(My eyes do persist in misreading "shitake" as "shitcake", which is an unfortunate choice of color names.)

slightly OT, but dan's misread made me think of it... anyone have a good remedy or strategy to help mitigate shoe funk? my bike shoes get pretty awful.

well... shitake is a mushroom and mushrooms do grow on...

Although, I think shitakes actually grow on wood. ;)

reddan, how do they feel in the summer?

rsprake

@rsprake: Dunno, I bought them last fall. :-)

I suspect they'd be fairly warm...not a lot of ventilation built in.

Come summertime, I usually bust out the SPD sandals.

I have the presidio pedal (women's) keens. They are fairly stiff and really comfy for riding and walking. They keep my feet pretty dry and warm, but my feet were a bit too warm last summer and I couldn't get them out again until it was in the 50s or 60s for highs.

I have the dzr prollys, they are great but expensive (I got a small discount), they grind a little.

@dmtroyer, a sprinkle of baking soda every now and then has always worked for me. New insoles won't hurt either!

Mr M & all the other guys - you can order the merrells for the next bridesmaid dress ride. It would be fun to do that again.

Bridesmaid dress ride?

marvelousm3

@ Pseudacris not what I was expecting at all. Funniest ride ever, the ride looks epically fun.

...often referred to as "Brides of March." LOL

(well, in other cities at least)

@dmtroyer - yeah the cleats are definitely recessed a bit further than the Shimano MTB shoes I have. I don't hear that constant grinding/crushing sound I have with the Shimanos walking on a sidewalk. I was worried that might make it harder to clip/unclip but I haven't noticed any difference in that department.

Are DZR shoes online only? Or can I buy them locally?

Are the DZR shoes sold locally or online only?

They don't have any dealers listed in PA unfortunately - it would be nice to convince one of the local shops to carry them. I mail ordered mine.

I hate it when I can't try them on first. Thanks for the info

I know pro-bikes has some chrome SPD shoes in stock. There are also some nice looking MTB shoes that can be worn casually and look a lot like regular sneakers.

I was thinking about the Chrome shoes but I hear the grind on pavement.

I really like the DZR shoes but this review states that the size is way off. I wear a 45 like the reviewer but he went with a 43!

Buying shoes online stinks.

I say get the DZR's, very cool.

I'd get some but for some reason I look ridiculous in skate style shoes. I need more of a Dromarti look

I didn't think these looked like skate shoes...

They kind of look like Chuck Taylors.

marvelousm3
2012-03-17 01:35:21

Sure, the one with the white bottom but the one with the black bottom doesn't in my opinion. Are there tweed/herringbone Chuck Taylors available? I'd wear those! :)

Pretty much any SPD shoes are going to be a little "cruncy" on pavement. Some shoes may not start out that way, but after wearing the soles down a bit they will.

Rode in today with my new Keen Austin SPD's. Thumbs up. Clip in easily, no walky grindy. They do feel like they will get warm, though, good for now.
