CMU abandoned bikes

There were tags on a few bikes locked at the set of racks I was at today. Dated 6/20, they said they were considered abandoned and would be removed after 3 days- which I am guessing means Monday. If you know of anyone who has an old bike locked up for a while, let them know. I wonder what CMU will do with them, or do the tags mean "steal me by Monday."

Kinda low of them to do it in three days' time over a weekend in the summer. Chances are pretty good that someone left a bike there during exam week and never got back to it before heading home. I'm sure not every CMU student lives all summer in some apartment just off of Beeler. Might I suggest to CMU that they ID the probably abandoned bikes about a week ahead of finals, and concentrate on removing those?

they do this every summer. lots of graduating students abandon their bicycles, and cmu cleans them up. they don't tag every bike, just the ones that look abandoned. and i believe they keep them in storage for something like three months before the owner can't get them back. i'm not entirely sure what they do with them, but i remember a friend of mine many years ago asked a cmu policeman if he could have some of the parts off of one of the abandoned bike (i think he was allowed to eventually, but he had to wait for it).

I was told that the bikes are sent to FreeRide. Seems about right to me. [The bikes that get get tagged are usually truly abandoned ones. You've been seeing them for months and months. The tires are flat, stuff is missing, etc.]
