Communicycle Aliquippa

Communicycle Aliquippa I got together recently with an old friend of mine, Rev. Mike Anastas, who is the pastor of Mt. Carmel Church down in Aliquippa. He knows that I’m “into cycling” so he was excited to tell me about a relatively new outreach program they started this year - It’s called Communicycle Aliquippa. It is very similar in concept to Freeride, but it is faith based. So you can earn a bike by either volunteering at the shop, or volunteering at one of the local churches. They already have a storefront on the main drag of town close to route 51 & an affiliated community café a block up the street. Mike said they had much success this year with close to 100 bikes being earned, but they would love to expand to where they could take youth on bike trips locally and to D.C., etc. They are working hard to make a positive impact on a down-on-its-luck community and I thought I’d give them a shout out here.

By the way, Mike was unaware of both BikePgh and FreeRide, nor was he aware of the work that Pat is doing on the NorthSide with Allegheny Center Alliance Church. So if any of you are reading this, I’m sure Mike would welcome a call. My impression is that they are strong organizationally, but not too bike savvy.
