commuter for under $500

does anybody have a suggestion on a decent commuter for under $500? I'm leaning towards a single speed/fixed gear with a flip flop hub. 52c m is my frame size.

I've been riding the same beat up Fuji fixed gear conversion for about 7 years now and a lot of the parts are from a single speed I threw together when I was working as a messenger about 8 or 9 years ago. Needless to say, it is beat up and I'm ready for something new.

This is going to be for rides of 15 miles and under around town, mostly the east end.

Erok sent me a list of bikes from Urban Velo's site, but there were too many to choose from.

the redline fixed gear comes with fenders and is pretty dope. they retail for around that.

Ive got a 52cm IRO Rob Roy I'll sell you. Its great for commuting. Fender and rack mounts and room for up to 35mm tires with fenders. e-mail me at yake (dot) david (at) gmail (dot) com if you want to check it out. $300-350 depending on the components you want.

If you're not hooked on the singlespeed/fixed gear thing, the Kona Smoke series is pretty sweet, and are well under $500. I have a Smoke 29, and have no complaints.

Dave, if you don't sell that IRO, I may interested once I'm back in town.

Thick Bikes in the southside has a couple single speed bikes with flip flop fixie/freewheel rear hubs for under $400. I was down there checking one out the other day.
