Critical Mass falls during the G20 this month
Will this be funny?
Y/N
From my understanding of the routes Critical Mass has taken through downtown in the past, I don't believe there will be an issue.
However, a bunch of bikers "restricting" traffic in Oakland or elsewhere in the city on Friday may be met with government employees.
I think the problem, if any, will be in the definition of "restricting". As in *whose* definition.
If past experience is any guide, CM doesn't get into the Golden Triangle until at least 6:30ish. In the 10 or so I've ridden, we typically toodle around Bloomfield or the South Side before getting Downtown. Who are we going to bother, that late in their festivities?
My only gripe with CM riders is that we don't stay critical. We get too strung out, which rather defeats the purpose. Say we had 75 riders, it would really help if we could clear an intersection in 30-45 seconds as opposed to 60-90.
Maybe the pres will join the ride.
~100 people riding through downtown during the g20 is sure to get some attention.
The pres and an entourage of 15 Secret Service would be a fine addition to a CM ride.
I am pretty sure people are already thinking about whats going to happen for Critical Mass. I am sure the media would love to spin CM into some anti-government protest. I have already heard some people talking about cyclists groups protesting.
Probably the first CM I can participate in, huh. Does it usually see that many riders? (100+)
I attended my first one last month, there was about 40-50 people.
Strap a keyboard to the handlebars and then I think it'd really be interesting.
Or maybe a bumper to the front....instead of a cow-catcher you'd have a protester-catcher?
I'd avoid Critical Mass this Friday like the plague.
I'll be there. I think I might make a nice sign that says "we are celebrating cycling" on one side, and "This has nothing to do with the G20" on the other.
The pres or the press? Either way it would be interesting. Routing Critical Mass downtown seems like the navy's "Freedom of Navigation" exercises--being slightly provocative to assert a right to travel in a given space.
Yeah brad, I go to a lot of critical mass but I will be skipping it this month for sure.
I'd avoid critical mass the like plague in general.
"This Bike Is My Health Care."
what is the deal with the critical mass going on right now?
Its till going on friday night right ?
There isn't anyone who decides whether Critical Mass happens. A Crticial Mass happens if, say, more that 5 people show up.
So did anybody here ride on Friday? Anything unusual happen?
Yes, advance scouts found a route around the city
Critical mass rode all over downtown!
Some of the police and some solders were cheering!
They really did not know what to think at the 16 and Penn checkpoint!!!!! The looks on the National Guards faces as 100+ people on bikes roll down penn ave towards them!
We went around the park where the march had just ended, and into downtown!! A couple of laps downtown and to the south side.
For a while there were 16 sherifs on bikes riding along.
I do not have photo's but I bet someone does.
I did take this shot the day before.
We had some of the most positive reactions to mass I had ever seen.
I was wondering if anyone could give me a little help posting pictures. I uploaded them to a photosharing site but dont know what codes to post
Get the URL of the actual image (typically ends in ".jpg"). Then type:
less-than-sign IMG SRC="url-of-the-image" greater-than-sign
Sometimes they'll give you the code to put in. Then just copy it and paste it in here.
hmmm no luck, all the in the box here?
nice. love that shot with the skateboard
