cycling in Altoona

I'm planning a day trip to Altoona, arriving and leaving by Amtrak, and running around Lakemont Park like a little kid with my bride of 25 years.

Boy it'd be nice to do this by train and bicycle. Any experience out there with biking around Downtown Altoona? It's all of 4 miles from Amtrak to Lakemont, but two bus rides, best I can figure out. Also, anyone have any experience with bikes on Amtrak?

I've ridden around downtown Altoona - it's an old northeastern city, so the downtown isn't too bad for biking. I can't give you any advice on getting to Lakemont Park though.

I have taken a bike on amtrak from DC, but my

understanding is that you cannot take one to philly.

I am not sure about altoona.

Downtown altoona is a ghost town.

From what I can remember of riding around to the race starts for the tour de toona is that 36 is an ok road with decent shoulders.

There is a decent cycling community that seem really great hwen I have been there. I am sure that somebody there would help answer questions.

You can't take your bike on the Pennsylvanian. I wish I could when I visit Altoona, but Amtrak says there is not baggage car on that route. I email to complain periodically. Perhaps you could help by adding your voice.

Yeah, supposing that you had a bike once you got to 'Toona, 36 is a good road to head to Lakemont park. Not ideal, but doable and I've seen others biking on it before. Though I'd expect cars to be more hostile there than in pgh where more ppl are educated.

Pretty sure there is a good bike shop about 1/4 mile after the park driveway on the left.

Lena's Italian restaurant is pretty good for Altoona, not a chain, and close to the train station.

Union Ave (from downtown, which is also business Rte 36 will take you right near lakemont. Once you get to the intersection with Plank Rd (big wide Blvd), rte 36 bears right. You MUST go straight thru the intersection and onto Frankstown Road. At the foot of the big mountain climb, bear right into the park - you will see it on your right.
