PITTSBURGH --

A bicyclist is in a Pittsburgh hospital Friday after being hit by a pickup truck in the Strip District.

Sky 4 flew over the scene at 12th and Smallman streets at about 6 a.m.

The injured person's name and condition were not immediately available.

Police are investigating and have not said if any charges will be filed.

smallman is the worst. people fly down that one stretch like it's a highway.

So what was the news value of the helicopter video? It was very dark (must have been very early) and I am not sure I even saw a bike in the film.

that would make it news value=1. All I saw was an ambulance and a location

This is scary for me, since I work in the strip in the early morning/late night on Penn. I hope we get more details, such as if he had lights or was not cycling responsibly (Today I saw a guy on a bike riding against the traffic on penn/17th. And I wonder why people think cyclists are irresponsible. One bad guy can ruin it for everyone.)

I ride on this stretch frequently and I wouldn't classify it as friendly.

The sad thing is that they attempted to calm traffic already. The lanes are narrow and there are crosswalks and the little signs telling people to yield which in turn makes drivers more impatient since as soon as there is a chance to pass there is a pedestrian crosswalk sign blocking them from doing so. The attempt to calm traffic just makes the traffic more angry and impatient.

Hope the rider is OK.

Sometimes I get impatient driving my car down the interstate at 65 mph when I could easily be going 75 or 80, but then when I realize I could get a multi-hundred dollar ticket, that calms me down.

@edmonds59, you don't get a ticket for running down a cyclist in Pittsburgh.

I avoid Smallman because people there drive crazy. It seems that about once per year, a pedestrian is killed in the crosswalk at Smallman & 21st. Every time, the city talks about putting a traffic light there, but it never happens. I'd love to see a light there.

When cycling, I'll use Penn (when inbound) or Railroad (when outbound) to avoid Smallman.

Evening news reports cyclist was 20 years old, and was taken to UPMC Mercy with minor injuries. No details on driver, circumstances or citations.
