Yeah, 311 it and the city may get around to it. It happens periodically on the Birmingham Bridge.

Birmingham, Liberty, Fort Pitt, Fort Duquesne, 31st, 40th and Smithfield Street bridges are PennDOT owned and maintained.

Contact PennDOT District 11 Maintenance at 1-800-FIX ROAD (1-800-349-7623)

6th, 7th, 9th, 16th, McKees Rocks, Homestead Grays, Rankin bridges are Allegheny County. They have a feedback form

I have seen the Highland Park bridge being swept. I think it is performed by the City, but I may be mistaken. And I am unsure of the frequency.

@ Sloaps - Very useful phone number and web form! Thanks.

I emailed in a 311 report on the 31st Street Bridge sidewalk once, and the City referred me to PennDOT. PennDOT referred me back to the City. Obviously they weren't both right. It seems that the sidewalk is maintained by the City and the main road is maintained by PennDOT. Insane.

Thanks, Ian.

There exists maintenance agreements between the City, County, PennDOT and other neighboring communities. Quid pro Quo between governments to make snow removal or paving more efficient. Much of it has to do with the age of our local governments and infrastructure.

For an easy example, the Glenfield Bridge between Hazelwood and Hays. The bridge structure is County, but the approaches are PennDOT. The road is a state route, but it's in the city. Of those three, who should maintain that corridor and how should the others reciprocate?

I saw a street sweeper driving across the HPB this morning around 8:20AM. It was going so slow it looked like it might be sweeping, but the brushes were up and stationary. Not sure where it was going, who owns it, or why, but I saw it.

I swept up some of the garbage from the Highland Park Bridge sidewalk today. This includes lots of broken glass bottle pieces, pebbles, a few screws, and there was even a razor blade on the sidewalk. Since I saw the broken glass on the Louisa St. steps, I decided to go to Target and buy a little hand broom and dust pan so that I could sweep up these kind of things. A few cyclists went by as I was sweeping up the piles of glass and thanked me.

Much appreciated, Zack. @pinky, @marko82, @rustyred, at least two others and myself swept the West End Bridge upstream sidewalk clean one weekend morning about three years ago. [2014 thread]
