As if! But in some fantasy world where new snazzy technology actually served our interest, it would be neat.

(In this world, I saw no point in getting sucked into the comment threads)

technology will fix everything, don't you know?

Yeah, in developing countries they have what's called a MIRROR... That you can look into (not to mention actually turning your head) before opening the door.

Reminds me of when NASA spent $1 million to develop a pen that can write in the anti-gravity realm of outer space while the russians also developed a writing utencil that could do the same thing for $.10 cents (the pencil).

for what it's worth, this is not actually a true tale.

You have to love those Germans! The engineer some incredible stuff, but I see some not-so-bright drivers freaking out when their door doesn't open.

BMW's do this thing that if you lock the door when you are in it, you have to pull the handle twice to get out--once t unlock the door and once to open it. To me this is great, one handle, one motion (two times), but I know of several people ('s wifes) who have broken the handles because the door wouldn't open (only pulled once).

I could see someone calling 911 over this. But it guess that is a better call then a 911 call for a cyclist getting doored.

if it's really for dooring, or for things behind, wouldnt it be easier to make a door that like this standard:

are we really that resistant to change?

I would love to see vertical doors on every car on the road. It would probably get manufacturers to start making lighters doors, and thus lighter cars.

Why not start putting suicide doors (hinged on trailing edge) on cars. I think people would be a lot more careful when opening doors if the consequence of not looking when something is coming was the loss of limbs.

I work with some gearheads and at one point they showed me that there is a kit to put lambo-doors up front and suicide doors in the back of my car. I have a Subaru Outback. It's a total mom-car. I don't get the motivation at all.

Haha, yeah I have heard the "space pen" was an urban legend of sorts but that article still made me think of that LOL...

suicide doors would be great for cyclists. if the only reason the so called suicide doors aren't used anymore is because they open in a front end collision, hence the suicide stigma, technology could fix that.

i have a dream...

No, they are called suicide doors because if you were to exit the car while moving in an emergency, the door would hit you. Also because people opening doors without looking would lose their legs.

Suicide doors use the exactly same hinge and latch as a regular door, just on opposite sides. In some cases it is a compound hinge though.

There is some debate on that... I believe they are called suicide doors because when they aren't latched properly they tend to fly open because of the aerodynamics involved.
