Downtown to Squirrel Hill - 02:00 - Safety concerns?

I am looking for a bit of advice. For the next month, I will be heading out of the Mercy Emergency Department between 1:00 and 2:00am and returning to my abode in Squirrel Hill.

In regard to my route, I typically jump on the jail trail, venture through the run, and then up to 5th for a few blocks to Wilkins.

Does anyone have any concerns in regard to safety with the jail trail or the connector between the run and 5th at 2 in the AM? I have the proper lighting, but thought that I should seek a few opinions first.

Thanks,

JAH

i've never heard of any real problems, aside from lighting issues and wild turkeys.

I have taken the trail plenty of times late at night. I usually see something interesting, but nothing of much concern- people "wrestling", graffiti artists, etc...

I have taken the trail plenty of times late at night and have never seen anyone, much less people wrestling. Seems like a funny place to wrestle.

yes, the rasslin' and the greenfield and sauf oaklin kids drinking and getting high.

in summary, look out for broken glass, animal noises and avoid the contact highs.

I work (sort of) at Mercy. You might have seen my gray Surly with black fenders and high handlebars.

If it were me, I'd just go right up 5th Ave. At 2 am, I don't think there are any buses. For the block or so you might go on Forbes with the drunkards, you could do the sidewalk.

If I did go down to the jail trial (through the tunnel? Down Brady St?), I'd probably go up to Squirrel Hill past the lake and through the park rather than up to 5th.

Just my tastes.

Next time you see somebody wrestling on the trail, shout "I call winners!"

Thanks for the replies.

Mick: Through the park would be nice, provided I can find the pseudo trail over the tracks at 2:00am. I like your idea of up 5th. The last buses appear to leave downtown at 1:00am.

Do you use the rack in the main Mercy garage?

JAH, you work in the Birmingham Towers once a week, no? I've drooled over your Indy Fab 'cross bike many a Friday morning.

Bossanova, yes, the poison control center is in the Birmingham Towers, so the old Indy Fab resides there on occasion. I am not on the Toxicology service this month; therefore, no Friday morning sessions with Mr. Yuk.

I have never had an issue riding at night by myself, but I don't know if I would want my wife riding by herself. It's spooky through there during winter nights.

Jah,

I do park at the main Mercy garage. At least I think it's the main garage.

I think the pseudo trail is pretty easy to find - even at 2 am.

Fifth Ave would be the easiest way. I think harassment from drunks is more likely on Fifth, but Fifthwon't have the "no-one-will-come-by-until-morning" issues that the trails and park might have.

The only folks I've seen late at night there are homeless guys sleepng on the benches.

There is also the option of riding through Panther Hollow and cutting back under the new parking garage/ Google building at CMU then coming out next to Flagstaff hill. I have ridden that and through the park at night and prefer not being on the trails in the dark just because of limited visibility.

Or, for the lazy/tired, one can just take the elevator in that parking garage (the building's called the "Collaborative Innovation Center" or CIC) up to Forbes level. It has no form of access control on top or bottom at any time of the day.
