Enforcement on Braddock and Penn this AM

As I was riding to work this morning, I first noticed a police car sitting in the Frick Automotive lot at Forbes and Braddock. Hmm, I thought, wonder if they're watching for people blowing through the red lights?

Soon after, I pulled up to the red light at Braddock and Penn. There was a motorcycle cop sitting on the sidewalk next to the Walgreens sign, watching the traffic on Penn.

I rolled up to him and said: "I'm glad you're here. I see cars run red lights terribly here every day."

He said: "I've seen that too."

A moment passed as the light changed on Penn. Sure enough, two cars went right though a solid red on Penn inbound.

"You mean like that!?" the cop said. Then he switched on his flashers and went out after the cars.

I have to admit there was a grin on my face the rest of the way to work...

I actually just happily clapped to myself when I read that

Back to school, Braddock and Forbes has patrolling officers through the year. Never saw anyone at Penn and Braddock though, good to hear that.

For most of the past 11 years, my son has gotten on and off the school bus at the intersection of Forbes & Braddock. On days when the police are there issuing tickets, all the parents are downright giddy.

For those who ride S Braddock between Forbes and Penn, be aware that there is now another school on that stretch of road. The old Park Place School, which for some time was condos, is now part of the Environmental Charter School. I'm not sure how that will affect traffic speed on that part of Braddock, but it will probably increase volume.

I know the Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association is working with the school to address traffic/parking/neighborhood concerns. My impression is that the school has been open to working with the neighborhood.

I wish they would start patrolling Meade and Thomas. It's the cool new place to drive like an idiot.

I was just on penn and Braddock and it was fine today. But I almost saw someone get run over near the shady side hospital at the end of liberty today. Wonder if that was anyone here. The driver was turning and didn't understand that the biker was going straight and therefore had the right of way.

HAHA nice!

I just witnessed the same thing on Route 51 / Nobles Lane / Whitehead street where the CoGo's / Sunoco are located.

Every single day I see cars just blow through the red light — up to 5 seconds after the light turns red.

When I saw a motorcycle cop sitting in the Sunoco parking lot I said to myself (at the adjacent intersection waiting for the green) "Oh, this won't take long!!!"

And sure enough the very next light change, 3 cars blew through the light up to 3 seconds after the light had changed red and the motorcycle cop tore ass after them.

It is one thing to "run" a red light because you are trying to beat the yellow / red transition but to blatently just plow through lights 3 or 4 seconds after they have turned RED just because you are some a-hole who can't wait another minute to get home then you deserve a ticket at the very least.

On my ride this morning/early afternoon I rode some of Pittsburgh's "now-freeways"--Thomas, Beechwood, Braddock (between Forbes and Hutchinson). Interestingly, on the parts of my ride that took me up Stanton Avenue and Brighton Road I felt much safer....

At any rate, I'm happy to see police looking after some of the streets albeit in the morning hours.

Took Penn Ave through Wilkinsburg on the way to work today, but pulled off onto Brushton Ave so I just missed seeing it. Great that there was a police presence out today!

Here is the text of a comment I left on the http://pittsburghpa.gov/police/contacts

site. I didn't mention anything about bikes because I was in my car when I saw it and the subject of my comment is general traffic law enforcement.

Subject: traffic law enforcement

Comment:

This morning I noticed the increased police presence and active citing of people running red lights on Penn Ave near the East End Food Co-op. Thank you for this. People drive around this city as if red lights are merely suggestions to stop and speed limits are actually minimums. Also I think that the police need to stop calling auto crashes "accidents". In most cases they are not accidents. They should be called "reckless endangerment", or in some recent cases "manslaughter". It is past time we start taking the mayhem on our city streets seriously.

The neighborhood has indeed been working with ECS on traffic and parking issues! Here is a link to our most recent newsletter item about the topic:

http://www.parkplaceblog.com/listserver/mail.cgi/archive/ppupdate/20120821174912/

We have asked ECS to inform parents and bus drivers that our neighborhood gets heavy bicycle use and to please use caution when pulling in and out of the school to pick up/drop off kids.

ECS is extremely open and receptive to community feedback.

If you notice reckless behavior by a parent or bus driver, or have any other complaints, then you should call the assistant principal, Ashley Frye at 412-242-1480 ext. 402.

I have attended several meetings at ECS over the summer. A issue that was addressed was the safety of Braddock. ECS took all of our concerns seriously and has been working with the neighborhood and police to ensure the safety of our children. Also a good amount of parents ride their kids to school by bicycle and that was also brought up. We were told the police will work hard to slow down traffic in the area. I have already sent a thank you email to the school after my daughters first day, the school kept all of their promises.

The ECS sent a note home with my daughter saying Please be aware of cyclists in the area when picking up your children. This school makes me very happy.
