Free Chrome cycling sneakers must be post-dated today

Re-post from roboto:

Check it out. Packages have to be post dated by today.

http://www.trackosaurusrex.com/pblog/index.php?entry=entry100317-135549

Basically, mail Chrome a pair of your old shoes and they will send you a new pair of shoes, which they just added to their product line.

I have a trashed pair of hemp Adidas shoes that are full of holes I will be mailing out today."

"In an attempt to let the world know how committed they are to their footwear line, Chrome announces their Turds For Gold Shoe Exchange. For two days only, Chrome will be slinging a new pair of shoes to anyone that sends them a worn-out pair of kicks.

"There are a lot of great shoe brands out their but few, if any, are made to handle the harsh demands of riding in the city," says Chrome Marketing Director, Matt Sharkey.

“Our shoes are built to hold up under the toughest conditions and are designed 100% to address the needs of the everyday city cyclist. Not only did we want to build a shoe that was durable and functional, but we also paid close attention to overall fit and timeless style."

The exchange begins on Wednesday, March 17 and ends promptly the next day on Thursday, the 18th. Packages must be post marked by 3/18 to qualify and should include a return shipping address and shoe size info.

Please ship all packages to:

Chrome Industries

Attn: Turds for Gold/Sharkey

580 4th Street

San Francisco, CA 94107

How the heck are they going to handle this? There are going to be a line of UPS & USPS tractor trailers arriving at their office over the next few days.

The post office on California on the northside is open later than most and will postmark with today's date if you get it there by 6, or 6:30 or something. You can call them for details. They are easy to find. Head north on Brighton Road from the North Side (near CCAC) at stoplight turn left onto California. Post office is +/- half a mile ahead on the left, just before the big bend in the road.

McKnight P.O. is open till 7.

I'm having my wife pack up a pair of old sneakers now. I'm on their site now. Are we *sure* this isn't a hoax?

There is apparently this website called "Facebook" that people like to use, and this is not a hoax:

I sent my old shoes today.

I'm guessing someone might have overestimated the popularity of semi-expensive "fixed gear" cycling shoes that look a whole lot like a pair of Vans crossed with Converse one-stars, leaving them with a decision: blow out excessive inventory at a huge discount and risk losing the ability to charge premium prices in the future, or give away a whole bunch as viral marketing.

I won't be out of work until 9....

If I ship FedEx do they get stamped with today's date or tomorrow's, since they wouldn't leave until tomorrow?

Plus, I just get my free stuff from Brian.

(Btw Brian, thanks for that wheel, rim, and tires.)

@ndromb these shoes were hardly free as it cost me $11 to ship a worn out pair of garmonts to SFO :-)

drat. would have made sense to find the smallest, lightest pair of beaters in the house to minimize shipping. $9.92 isn't bad, but I like to beat a bargain to death. Somewhere between a hobby and a compulsion.

@dmtroyer My business has a FedEx account. I get pretty good rates. I ship 24"x24"x4" 8lbs boxes to LA for about half that.

Considering 7% sales tax, it's close enough to free for me.

Shipping for me was around $9.50

My pleasure. Thanks for help clearing out the pile of crap in my basement :-)

Postage for mine was $9.50. I will gladly participate in a relatively benign viral marketing campaign to get a new pair of shoes for that price.

YES! Got my chrome shoes today.

Just watched the Enterprise truck come up my street and thought "that's probably not my chrome shoes."

Wrong! :)

So, now that a few of you have received your shoes, what's the verdict? Worth the $9-10 that you spent on postage?

swalfoort
2010-04-19 14:38:36

They're $70-90 shoes, well worth the postage. If you like how they fit, they're pretty awesome. I've had some Chrome shoes for well over a year... Grippy rubber sole, reinforced sole for pedaling, cordura uppers, heavy laces, reflective patch on the back, reinforced toe box.

bradq

mine came friday. smell terrible out of the box, and my wife hates them... otherwise I love them!

dmtroyer
2010-04-19 14:54:38

Got them, they look good and fit well for me, and the lace holder is nice.

The reflective patch has already come halfway off of my left shoe, though. How do they hold up after a year, Brad?

alankhg
2010-04-19 18:06:21

Wife informs me there is a shoebox on the porch.

stuinmccandless
2010-04-19 19:00:47

But will there be any shoes in it by the time you get home?

swalfoort
2010-04-19 19:21:14

So what did everyone end up getting? Mine were a pair of brown Midway's.

The shoes seem really well made.

igo
2010-04-19 21:31:56

Red Soles, brown uppers. More importantly, they fit!

I'm also heartened by the fact that they were shipped via FedEx Ground, which is who's supplying me with an income right now.

We're all going to be exhibiting a certain creepy shoe-niformity at any upcoming event.

2010-04-20 02:26:44

not me... i happened upon this thread too late. i would have been happy to trade in my falling apart, 4-month-old $12 walmart velcro shoes for some of these :(

I biked the 15 miles to FedEx today. Very comfortable. I probably haven't walked 1/4 mile in them yet, but they're just wonderful on the bike.
