FS: new Bern helmet, for cheapsies

Hey all,

I got two Bern helmets for Christmas (long story), and one of them is too small. It would be a big pain to send the helmet back since it was a gift, so I figured I would ask here to see if anyone was interested in buying it. It was this one in a men's Large. (I can send pictures if you want, but it's absolutely in like-new condition.)

I literally didn't do any more than wear it around my apartment for a while in order to decide whether it was in fact too tight, and I promise I don't have any nasty head diseases. It is in the box with the tags on it. It's a really nice helmet, so if it will fit someone, I'm glad to send it off to a good home in Pittsburgh instead of paying to mail it back.

I know the person who bought it didn't even pay even the $41.95 listed there, although I don't know exactly how much she paid, so just name a price if you're interested. I'm not looking to make a big profit on it. Email skpTWENTYSEVEN (at) pitt.edu. (Turn that TWENTYSEVEN into digits. Unless you're a spammer.)

P.S. If you're interested and need to know about sizing: Bern helmets seem to run small. I do have a positively enormous head for an otherwise smallish female person, but I wear a men's Medium in Specialized helmets (albeit with the adjust-y thing loosened most of the way) while needing the XL in Bern helmets. Bern's Large reportedly works for someone with a head circumference of 22.5-23.25", and it's probably better for someone on the lower end of that because I think my head is right around 23.25". The visor liner can be tightened/loosened a teeny bit, but it's not a super-adjustable helmet, so exact measurements will help.

their sizing is so weird. i'm pretty sure i couldn't have worn one of their women's helmets even as like a five year old girl

@untameable2: I got busy this week and totally overlooked that post until now, but that sounds good, so just email me at the address above, and we can work out the details!

I feel like their sizing is weird too! I bought a women's XS and it was too big on my bare head but it fit with a wool hat on. I ended up sewing an extra insert into the original insert but it's still a little too big (it moves around) on my bare head.

I've been using it cause it's winter and I can rock it with a layer underneath.

I don't have a freakishly small head so it's so weird that the XS is big.

Weird! So I guess they don't run small overall but the size range is just strangely compressed from either direction to leave out small and big heads? So odd. That also makes me feel especially giant-headed since I'm also a girl person and would need a men's XXL to fit a hat underneath, haha.

I don't think it's that they are sized weird so much as it's that they can't be adjusted as much as normal helmets can.

I'm glad this came up because I was considering a Bern, but now I will check sizing much more carefully.

@rsprake, I agree - the adjuster in the back doesn't allow you to do all that much!

Yep, that's true too. And only some of the liners even have an adjuster. It's a shame that they didn't perfect the sizing/adjustment aspect since the helmets really are nice otherwise. I'm obsessed with the winter one that I got for Christmas - keeps my ears warm AND looks a lot less dorky than my previous road helmet - but it has zero adjustment potential, which is just silly.

Also, Dan, I got your email and emailed you back. If you've just been busy, no rush, but I just want to make sure you got my response. My email really likes to go into people's spam boxes, so I always worry whether people are getting my messages.

FYI the only difference between the summer and winter bern helmets is the liner. You can order different liners from bern or a dealer (cough thick cough cough)

True. They snap and velcro in and out. It's clever.

(Side note: I still haven't been to Thick since I moved here; I feel like I should go check it out sometime.)

However, it's also another reason why more adjustability would be nice: the XL helmet is a good fit for me with the summer liner, but with a slightly-less-bulky summer liner, it's too loose (kind of wobbles around on my head) with no way to tighten it. A Large is way too tight even with the summer liner, though. I'm currently trying to devise a way to add extra padding so that I can wear the XL with the summer liner, but I haven't quite perfected it.

Sorry Duplicate post.

I've actually ripped the buttons off of my summer liner when trying to remove it. Apparently the buttons were more attached to the helmet due to corrosion than they were to the liner. At least it was only $10 for a new summer liner, the winter one runs about $40.

Just noticed a typo: that first place where I said "summer liner," I meant winter liner. Whoops.
