This was part of an amazon feed to me this morning:
I don't know what you need exactly, in terms of size, so don't know if this would work for you, but the sale price on this was only $41.
I need a secure way to leave stuff on my bike while I swim. I looked at this
Pricey, and it looks pretty big.
Anyone have a suggestion for a locking bike trunk? I am going to put it on my Scott urban commuter which has a standard rear rack. Thanks!

Sarah, I don't think you'll find something much cheaper. But you could always just bolt an ammo box onto your bike rack and lock that. There are some designs on the web.
I thought I posted a link earlier today to something I found on Amazon. Only $41. Did I post to wrong thread? Not post? I'll try to find it again...
@swalfort, thanks.
@jonawebb, if I put an ammo box on my bike maybe drivers will think I'm packing and give me 4' for a change.
Now you're giving me ideas.
You can usually find universal trunk cases made for scooters pretty cheap on ebay.
Hmm. Made of plastic, and the only thing holding it on the bike is 4 screws? Hope it wasn't anything you really wanted to keep, because this isn't even a speed bump for someone with a wrench.
I think the ammo box idea is better - at least it's metal! Maybe with a loop for a security cable to keep it tethered to the frame?
Good point but I am not locking up for all day in Oakland. Just for a few hours on the N Shore trail while I swim.
Apparently you can break the lock with a screwdriver. But it is a deterrent. Just like when I use a thin cable lock for my road bike when I run in places. I wouldn't leave it all day like that, but hopefully it's better than nothing.
How about chaining a small security box to a tree/post somewhere off the trail? Then take it down after swim season.
Edit: something like this could also be attached to your rack with a drill and some bolts http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/689977/MMF-Industries-Security-Box-With-Fire/?cm_cat=
If you just want a deterrent, throw a luggage lock (or padlock if it'll fit) onto a gym bag/backpack and lock that to your U-lock. Not knife proof, but it'll deter casual theft. Drag the bag around in the mud a while & nobody will be interested in it.
@sarah_q: yes, it is almost insulting that companies ask that we pay money for locks that are, at best, a deterrent.
Since we're on the subject, Deviant Ollam has some really awesome presentations on locks.

The one on gun safes is very interesting. In fact, even though he defeats them easily, some of those smaller safes might actually be practical for bicycle storage, if they could be secured to the frame. Certainly better than this plastic thing. (Especially if you're willing to do a bit of hacking, as he talks about.)
