I realize this post is 3 years old, but I have been wanting to learn more about the entire Hazelwood Greenway project and stumbled upon this question. Currently there is a trail that is cut from Hazelwood up to the top of Greenfield. It makes for a pretty hearty climb but it doesn't really end up anywhere that for further MTB riding. Since I live in Greenfield I love to connect this climb with Frick Park, Nile Mile Run and the Heritage Trail. Makes for a great loop. But more interesting to me, is the possibility of extending this trail further. There are other sections of Greenfield marked as the "Hazelwood Greenway" but they are currently overgrown. It seems possible to extend this back to the Eliza furnace trail with minimal time on the road. Does anyone know about the Hazelwood Greenway project?

Google turns up some hits, plus this thread from last year. I know there are other threads where we talked about reclaiming abandoned staircase streets, and the like. Like this one and this one and this one. I'd say keep in touch with this board, and the groups that helped arrange for the Sandcastle thing to get done. The city declared it a greenway, protecting it from development and volunteers from PA Cleanways and the Student Conservation Association worked to rid the greenway of 10 tons of household trash, six tons of scrap metal, 100 bags of recyclables, and 72 tires. Working with the International Mountain Biking Association and the Hazelwood Initiative, they are developing a trail system of which this segment is the first official opening. It's a broad and easily navigable trail. At about the midway point you will find a space that is more open than the rest. This is where the bulk of the trash was hauled from. Imaging having to hand-carry an abandonded car from here back to Kingwood street. There's still at least two more back here if you want to help. It may be possible, with more work, to develop a mostly greenway trail system between Schenley and Frick parks. Trailhead: To access the southern terminus of this section of trail, turn East off of Second Avenue (Rt 885) in Hazelwood onto East Elizabeth Street. A two-car parking pullin is located at the end of the street before a hairpin into a private drive. To get to the Norther terminus, turn off Second Ave onto Flowers Ave. Flowers bears right and becomes Killbourne St. Turn right at the end onto Tesla Street which becomes Kinglake Steet. There is a gate to an access road and a sign marking the Hazelwood Greenway. Park near but do not block the gate. (Lat:40.4073 Lon:-79.93652)

There also seemed to be a footpath above irvine st, where sylvan ave may have run at one point. It's right off greenfield ave by the run. It goes from sylvan ave & waldeck st to sylvan ave and home rule st. It was super grown in last time I tried to traverse this. It goes right below bud hammer park I think. Never made it all the way to home rule st on this path. You can kind of make it out on google maps sattelite view.
