BIKEPGH MESSAGE BOARD ARCHIVE

I'm afraid I just blue myself.

So my bike is blue, as is the seat it came with. since then, I've been trying to make the entire thing blue.

I had to replace my handlebar tape as it was slipping, and I made sure to be a bit more careful of the placement on the bar this time, and it looks and feels pretty legit. Got a blue bottle cage! My roommate got me a water bottle with a built-in filter, so when I replaced the filter on it, I made sure it was a blue one as well. Got new pedals, but the blue ones that my shop had didn't fit my bike. Oh, well, I can paint them I suppose.

I don't remember if I mentioned, but I lost my rear reflector, and I'm looking into buying one of these:

anyway, on with the showing off!

I'm also buying a u-lock this week (finally), and I may pain it blue as well. Once I have a good lock or two, I'll probably try to save up for a quality pair of blue rims and blue tires. I was in Thick yesterday, and I saw a blue chain that I may also invest in.

I'm definitely geeking out over this bike here.

glad someone got it! anyway, does anyone have any recommendations on the type of paint for my pedals and lock? Or should I just get a can of spraypaint?

I'm sure there are people who post here who are artists, or just like to paint bike parts, who could help me out.

Any good spray paint is going to work about the same, like a rust-oleum or krylon. But clean the parts really well, I like to use automotive brake cleaner, comes in a spray can, and clean as many surfaces as you can get to with fine steel wool or sandpaper. Hit it one last time with the brake cleaner and then don't touch the surface until you paint.

If you really want to go kookoo, Kraynicks might even have some blue cable housing!

The paint will start coming off the u-lock in no time probably given how often it bump-s/scrapes up against.... everything. See if you can find some of that rubber dip. That'd be awesome.

Someone find this girl a string of blue LEDs and she'll really be set.

i'd love to get some LEDs on my green / black bike. How do I get hooked up with LEDs?

RubberFactory, are you blueish? You don't look bluish!

Does that mean Pittsburgh is a tickle of joy on the blue belly of the universe? It must be scratched.

I am nor an artist or someone who likes to paint bike parts, but your best bet for the U-Lock is shrink tubing--paint isn't going to stick very well to the rubber insulator around the shackle, and duct tape is going to get nasty fast.

As for those pedals, the best way to go would be dissembling them to remove the spindle. and then just painting the platform. You could also mask the spindle to a similar result.

As long as your prep the pedal and spray several light coats you'll be fine. However, no matter what they won't hold up as well as factory painted/anodized/powder coated pedals.

well, I'm not permitted to be in class until my financial aid is sorted out, so I'll probably pick up a lock today from there. I will look into some shrink tubing for it!

AD rules! Can't wait to see the movie. I put handle bar tape around my U-lock.

They also sell tape for hockey stick handles in every color of the rainbow. It is made of cloth I think. Seems somewhat durable, and it is only a couple bucks a roll.

i agree that shrink tubing is totally the way to go. it's pretty inexpensive, and it'll last way better than tape (hockey tape is sort of meant to be sticky).

if the future is anything like the past, you're going to have to. i feel like i've been waiting like 5 years already.

I'm just throwing this out there: I raised my seat about 1/2 inch today, and it changed my life...

Plastic surgeons make BIG bucks from that phenomena.
