Is it safe to bike alone long distances?

I'd like to bike alone from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia on Route S in May. Is doing this safe in terms of potential crime, whether robbery or "Deliverance-style" crime. How many people will I encounter on the trail?

I'm a male, but I'm very short and very skinny.

You shur' do got a perty mouf!!!

I ended up riding alone a good portion of that route a couple years ago (look up the crush the commonwealth threads)...

Other than the ATA trail to Rockwood, and the Schuylkill River trail into Philly it is along roads and populated enough to not be scared like you should riding across West Virginia all alone :-)

It is my experience that people are much friendlier out in the country than in the city. You will probably get more harassment from dogs along the route than people.

Will there be a lot of other cyclists?

you'll be fine riding alone. riding around with a loaded bike makes it look like you're doing something important.

as far as company goes, aside from while riding crush the commonwealth, i've never seen another bicycle tourist on route S. there are however plenty of signs to indicate to motorists that this is a bike route, so there are local riders.

i biked from pittsburgh to buffalo last year by myself, and the only people i came across were interested in helping me out. it was a pretty wonderful experience, in that regard. one nighttime work commuter even showed around erie when i got there (bike shops and bars, the essentials, you know?).

just make sure you have an emergency pickup contact if something goes catastrophically wrong (with your bike).

Your greatest fear should not be people, but cars.
