It ain't cheap, but...

Monkeylectric has a new POV bike wheel system that just debuted at Maker Faire.

$2K is a lotta greenbacks, though.

If the price comes down, it'd be an awesome way to provide ad space on pedicabs.

Personally, I want one to display real-time ride stats, like miles traveled, nominal carbon not burnt, beard growth rate, etc.

i would put a picture of myself riding a bike with those things on the wheels.

that way it will have that infinity effect of myself riding in the wheel of the next bike in the wheel of the next bike in the wheel of the next bike in the wheel of the next bike and so on

There used to be something called HokeySpokes that were like this only single-color, text, and less expensive. Dunno if they're still around.

I saw a rider on Friday traveling down Grant Street with some LED's on their rear wheel. Wasn't very fancy. Could've been a single Monkey Light from monkeyelectric.

in our lifetimes I see Tour riders riding with light up billboards on their wheels. weird.

i just got an email about this: http://hackaday.com/2009/06/11/rgbike-pov/

[Hazard] is designing this open source POV system for bikes. With the recent release of Monkey Electric’s m464q, [Hazard] was inspired. He found the price tag of roughly $2,000 to be way too much though. He is designing his own and taking us along for the trip. He hasn’t quite reached the Monkey Electric level of features, but he does have image display and simple animation. He encourages others to join him in improving the design. He notes that the image on the back side of the wheel is mirrored, so text would be backwards.

Mmm...looks like good winter project, or maybe in time for Light-Up Night.

One of my CMU classmates was working on making a rotating video display like this as a class project. I should see about putting together a copy and hacking around with it.

I talked to a guy from the North Side this morning at the downtown breakfast. He has the single spoke (light only, no text) system. I took photos and video. I'll try to figure out how to post them here, or create a link. He really liked them, and said they threw out a whole pool of light. He has two inserted on the rear wheel.
