July-Pittsburgh Bike Party, by Flock of Cycles
Friday July 19th
Pittsburgh Bike Party Picnic in The Park. Come out ride with us and celebrate Pittsburgh's cycling community. Also if you want you have the option of bringing food and a blanket for the picnic.
We're meeting at Dippy at *6pm* and departing at 6:30!

--What is a Bike Party?--
A Bike Party is a welcoming, family-friendly, all-inclusive, FREE event consisting of a leisurely-paced bicycle ride (complete with music and mechanical support) and ending with a post-ride party.
The group pedals through the city at a slow, welcoming pace appropriate for riders of all ages and capabilities. You get a chance to make new friends, learn new routes, and have fun on your bike!
--Where?--
We'll meet at Dippy the Dino (on Forbes Ave in Oakland, in front of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, across from the Cathedral of Learning).
--When?--
We'll meet at 6pm and leave at 6:30pm.
(Won't be off work in time? We'll post the route later so that you can catch up with us along the way.)
--How long is the ride?--
Around 8-10 miles.

--What happens in the case of rain/snow/zombie apocalypse?--
On the afternoon of the ride, we'll decide whether conditions are safe enough to ride. Look for updates here, on Twitter, and on our website a couple of hours before the start of the ride if things are looking sketchy.

Nah, too hot for that sort of thing this time. Let's do another bridesmaid dress ride. That one we had was in October 2010, better weather for that sort of thing. Also, I did have it on for the Halloween ride last year. Once a year (or two) is often enough for that flavor of goofiness.

I captured video of the ride from Dippy to East End Food Co-Op. Will post links when the set is ready.
It's from my helmet cam, pointed backwards, so it's sideways and features every head movement, plus has everyone's blinking headlights, so it won't be the most entertaining thing you will ever see, but since I have it, I may as well post it.
Here is the first one (of five), showing from Dippy to where we pulled over on North Craig after getting split at a light.
I tried to get a pan of the whole group at the beginning.

You can do it directly in YouTube, I remember discussing it before but for some reason Stu didn't want to do it.

After I get them uploaded, maybe. It's been uploading steadily for six hours and is only 2/5 done. I hope they complete by the time I have to shut the machine down to travel to work.
As to why I don't: I seem to lose a lot of size in the rotated image.

I've pushed the buttons to get all five stabilized and the first one rotated to be right side up. It doesn't seem to let me do more than one at a time. I'll get to the other four eventually.

BTW, I for one really like the name "Flock of Cycles".
Its true that people might not understand exactly what it means, but they usually know a "Bike party" is like Saturday night Carson Street on two wheels.

I prefer the name FoC over Pgh Bike Party, as it is only one change removed from Critical Mass, which it ostensibly replaced here in Pittsburgh. As one of the admins on the Facebook page for Pittsburgh Critical Mass, I get a steady trickle of people, new in town, who are looking for CM. I direct them here.
That said, I'm OK with leaving things in a rather two-named state. We can call it PBP, but the website is FoC. And as I've said elsewhere (and since the beginning of FoC), there is still a viable need for CM, even if it is dormant at the moment.

Personally, I think it is more important that the infrastructure for CM is in place than to have the actual rides. I think it is a good thing that a FB page is maintained. It's there if it needs to be... like a bat-signal.
I'm not sure that people are necessarily looking for CM so much as it is a nationally recognizable group ride and a good starting place when you are new to the city.
In light of recent events, I am a little more open to having critical mass rides in very targeted locations... as much a protest as an awareness ride (which seems to be the point of CM anyways).
