Karma

Just need to post this. Had some good karma pay off yesterday.

On the commute home, I stopped and helped a confused looking couple find the jail trail. Very pleasant folks. I was in a bit of a hurry (my dog has issues if left alone for more than a set amount of time), but helped them anyway.

Then up on Beechwood Blvd by the 5 way intersection, I got a flat. Sadly, I didn't have any tire irons w/ me. But sure enough in a few seconds a nice cylist stopped and helped. (He didn't have any either but we figured it out.

If I hadn't stopped and helped those folks, I probably wouldn't have gotten the hand with the flat. So hurray for karma.

The bike helped me deliver some good karma today. Outbound 12 McKnight bus, a woman looked very worried, clearly didn't know where she was going. Conversation with four nearby passengers, including me, we figured out the store on McKnight Rd she was headed to -- for a job interview -- with less than five minutes to play with if she made a mistake.

I ended up figuring out the bus stop she needed, got off with her an extra mile and a half prior to my stop, and walked with her to the store, explaining as we went how to get back into town afterward, and how to use the Plan B Bus in case she missed the first one. No website tells you about Plan B buses.

If I hadn't had the bike with me, the best I would have been able to do was say "get off here and walk thataway" quickly, and hope for the best.

She had other issues, too -- wrong fare, didn't know about Zone 2, not sure which of a couple of stores that chain was the one she was actually being interviewed at -- but the key was the bike. It allowed me to help in a very meaningful way without adding more than a couple of minutes to my travel time.

I even got a bit of fun out of it, getting to pull a stray shopping cart across a mall parking lot at high speed. Wheeee!

If my kids didn't already have names, I'd name them Stu.

I bring all that stuff but it often is used on others more than myself! I try to pay it forward when possible.

have to thank Becca though we were touring last weekend and my front quick release bounced off (a first!) while riding the rocks to sandcastle and she had to go on a mission to REI to get me a new one. They hooked it up and we were back on the road. I had to help fix her flat shortly thereafter followed by another gent's shortly up the road.

good karma yesterday on the commute home that the cabbie who almost took me out changing lanes illegally in an intersection on Grant reacted to my yelling.

Oh man. I have lucked out so many times in the past I was due for a karma reset. I rode in to school at the peak of the torrential downpour this morning, so I was getting wet enough to begin with. Then the water is like 1-2 inches deep on Fifth Avenue, and I get totally soaked when a car races through the street-wide puddle and throws up a huge wall of water. Ugh. My feet are FREEZING and I will probably dry out just in time to go home and get all wet again. Ugh.

It's not easy being a badass.

I had some good Karma today. I was behind a motorist who forgot to close her gas cap this morning so at a red light I asked her if she wanted me to close it and closed it for her. Also, I stopped to ask another cyclist if he need help. He asked for a patch which of course I didn't have, but I still tried to help. About 100 feet later I had a van honk at me as he passed me and I looked at him expecting the usual from someone who honks at me, but when I looked he was giving the hand signal for a right turn. If he hadn't done that I would might have been hooked by him a little bit later.
