MAKE: build your own cargo bike

wow. that's pretty cool. I've been trying to figure out how to get the cat to the vet without giving her a heartattack. That big bin gave me some ideas on blacking out my crate/her carrier.

It looks a little like the bike carts I've seen people pedaling wares in (in other cities), like italian ices or hot dogs.

(*Stupid question alert*) How do you steer?

reading thru the instructable you find there is a pivot under the cargo area so the two wheels in the front turn

Duh.

Thanks.

(not so stupid a question, I had it too at first!)

Actually the more I look at it more i think it is built wrong, the pivot is in a bad place and I can only imagine what kinds of stresses are on it.

I have the same question every time I see cargo bikes:

Why not just get a kiddy trailor for 50 bucks on craigslist? They can be taken off easily and probably hold the same amount of stuff if not more.

Or make a bigger trailor yerself?

I wasn't going to say anything, but the design of that cargo bike is horrible.

well I did post the thing at a little after 6 in the morning. I like the concept if not the design

It looks almost like a Mercurio cargo bike but without a robust pivot. You get a big rider on there, and a few bags of grain/rice/whatever and that thing is going to collapse into a puddle of scrap in the parking lot.

Cargo bikes are like the SUVs of the world. Only good if you're hauling stuff around all the time. Most people aren't carrying that much cargo ever.

Would also like to poke fun at it for not being aero dynamic at all.

Looks really hard to steer also. Looks like you would need a lot of upper body strength and strong abdominal muscles
