Meat retailers with owners who don't threaten to shoot bikers (Avoiding Jo-Mar)

We have all been talking about how scary Ken Zvirman's road rage is, and we now know he is the President of Jo-Mar Provisions Inc. on 18th Street in the Strip District of Pittsburgh.

So, where is there a bike-friendly place to get meat in Pittsburgh?

I know the Strip (Strip district in Pittsburgh / Smallmen Street / Penn Ave) is full of fresh markets. I am looking for things like meat, beef, fresh, tripe, steak, American Kobe-style beef, game meats, chops, roasts, shoulder, butt, shank, round, brisket, flank, sirloin, tip, ground beef and other meats and cuts, but some of it is wholesale. I am not looking for wholesale (meat wholesale distributor), I am looking for retail (retail meat sales).

Some where on Smallman St in the Strip (Strip

District) would be ok, but I would go somewhere else that isn't in the Strip District.

So to recap: Where can a cyclist go to buy , steak, American Kobe-style beef, game meats, chops, roasts, shoulder, butt, shank, round, brisket, flank, sirloin, tip, ground beef and other meats and cuts? It is important the the owner of the meat retailer is not known for threatening bicyclists.

If you're willing to spend a few extra dollars, why not keep it even more local and support the local ranchers?

As I mentioned in the other thread, I buy my meat directly from a local farmer, Joe Rush. The cows are grass-fed, pastured, yadda, yadda, yadda. He also does pork, turkeys, chickens, lambs, and ducks. Joe has never tried to run me over when I meet him in Squirrel Hill with my delivery.

You may also want to look into Penn's Corner Farm Alliance--they work with other local producers and have both beef and chicken shares. Neil Stauffer (the manager) could help you find a good local supplier, too.

And of course, they aren't know for it, but the East End Food Coop carries a pretty good supply of local and non-local, sustainable raised meat. They don't have the same sort of selection as a butcher might, but it's really not bad, either.

the coop also buys from ron gargasz. he's a local dude who started the sustainibility program at slippery rock university. he's got a house built into a hillside. nice dude to boot

i used to buy frozen and fridge food at the coop. although i'm vegetarian, it was still cool to buy directly from the guy who raised it, only a few miles away. he also grows many of the grains that he feeds to his cattle. that's way more sustainable than an organic apple from washington, or organic lettuce from california

Some good tips to avoid Jo-Mar Provisions and Ken Zvirman down on the Strip.

I will have to check down at the coop sometime.

I invite all posters and riders to join me for a ride to Ken Zvirman's place of business Jo-Mar Provisions Inc. at 42 18th St in the Strip. We will be starting the ride at Coffee Tree in Squirrel Hill Sunday at 8 AM. It would be interesting to see exactly what Ken Zvirman's meat house looks like. Perhaps we could also see the massive black $58k Nissan Armada with a license plate of PA - GRA 2083 and a rage invoking hand print on it's driver's side front fender. I wish Ken Zvirman no harm, but certainly am curious what type of butcher shop is run by someone who in a matter of minutes can threaten to kill someone with a gun and then to cause them harm with his 7000 pound $58k battle ship named vehicle. Perhaps if we wanted to we could actually turn it into the Tour de Ken Zvirman Rage Ride and continue to his home at 1717 Briarwood Road 15239 which would be about a 20 mile ride from Jo-Mar Provisions Inc. Unfortunately this would call for a ride through Monroeville to Plum which is not a particularly bike friendly area, which may explain why Ken Zvirman lives there.

On the way back we could check out the meats at Whole Foods, where a very helpful Scotsman is the butcher. Whole Foods, unlike Jo-Mar Provisions Inc owned by Ken Zvirman, is bike friendly.
