Midnight Mass - May 8

Great ride tonight. Around 25 people showed (despite the forecast). Almost everyone stop at red lights and slowed at stop signs, about 60% had helmets, and 90% had both front and rear lights. A lot of new faces--almost all with great attitudes. All in all, a great little ride with some great people.

Here is an estimation of our route (about 12mi)

I made it home at 1:40a, almost completely dry.

Thanks for the map. I had a lot of fun. I think I was one of the last ones home and I too made it home right before the rain hit.

I got back from an errand in Cranberry at 10:30p and decided against it. I'd been awake since 4:30a. With the most-of-an-hour ride just to get there I'd've been spent before we even started.

I awoke at 1:45 to lightning blasting down nearby, so I wouldn't've made it home even if I'd finished the ride.

Next month! Plus, First Fridays at the Frick starts next month. Great way to spend the evening, too!

I had a fun time as well. Don't know if anyone noticed that I split up roughly as we turned from Stanton onto Negley. Good thing I looked backed and waited, because right then someone was in a pickle. Her name was Maggie and she had a flat, and we this was like the furthest distance we were from her place in Oakland, some 3+ miles.

She told me she had a flat and looked prepared to walk and I was like, "I think you'd be better off just trying to ride slow. We're something like 3 miles out, there's no bus service, and of course that rain is coming in." So we ended up taking a nice slow detour back to Oakland. Here's the map of that route.

We both made it back safely and DRY. It was a fun thing unto itself. I actually buzzed around the block a bit looking for any people returning and caught a nice light show from the top of the hill at Dawson and the Boulevard looking towards town. THEN the rain hit...

Man, looks like you rode right past my house at the end of the trip, would have been so convenient if I came. Bummer.

I had a lot of fun. This was a great group to ride with. I appreciate so much the strong effort that was made to keep everyone together... and for routing the ride to go by my apartment! Hope all made it home dry...

Bummer that you missed it, Rob!

Nick, I'm glad you were there for her. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that we unintentionally lost anyone. Usually people just slowly drop off, so as the ride gets smaller, I don't think much of it.

Next time, don't be afraid to yell ahead. I know a bunch of us had tubes/patch kits/pumps and we would have happily waited and helped her get fixed up.

Well, I tried my best to get some people's attention about the situation, but the group was a solid block or more away by the time I hesitated. I think some people did see us, but like you said they assumed we were taking off rather than there being an issue.

However, in the end it wasn't too major and we survived. :P

It was fun though and I was glad I decided to do it rather than fret about the weather, which arrived an hour or more later than I was actually expecting. It seems the weather was teasing us for a while there though, I was surprised how long it took before it actually started raining.

I was glad to see people were mostly in line, and yet still that one driver got pissed about us on Highland in East Liberty when the road was pretty vacant. It was one of those things that like convinced me that there are simply always going to believe that bicycles have no right to be on the road.
