Mon Valley Century - August 14, 2011

This century is a nice ride I've done a few times in the past, and I plan on doing it this year as well. It starts a little south of town in Elizabeth, Pa., and travels some really pretty, low-traffic roads for routes up to 100 miles. It's very low key and run by a local amateur radio club. Maybe it could be put on a Bikefest calendar?

Main page is here.

I did this ride last year (well, the 73 mile version). It was fun but I haven't decided if I want to do it this year; I'm not really sure that I'm back in shape.

Anyway, if someone is up for doing it as a moderate-paced ride (for the 70, maybe 100 miles), I'd be interested in the company. "Moderate", I think, means no hammering up the hills.

I believe I am doing this. The batman ride I am leading is later, so i will probably move along at a faster pace. Probably doing the century. How does it compare to the ms150 route on the first day as far as difficulty goes? Anyone ever do both?

I've done both rides and they are comparable in terms of difficulty. The MS150, day one, seemed to have a lot of "rollers," while the 70 mile Mon Valley ride had two longer climbs out of the Mon Valley, one up to Route 40 from Monongahela, and another out of California (if I remember right). Overall, the Mon Valley ride is really nice and hits some great roads and places that you otherwise might not see.

The killer hill is Albany Rd. coming up out of Brownsville. OMG - great climb.

Yup, about 14% for the middle 1/2 mile, and 9% from top to bottom. Choose your gears wisely.

(As near as I can tell from the map it's actually Brownsville Rd; the settlement at the foot of the hill is named Albany.)
