More bikers on the street recently

As students come back for new semester, I have noticed more and more bikers on the street recently. I hope it's a good thing and hope those high-up people would make Pittsburgh more bike friendly. I usually count how many I see that day. I saw over 12 bikers on the street today.

How many you see today :) ?

Ride safely, everyone.

I've seen quite a few, and while this makes me happy as a biker, I do wish people would ride more safely and PREDICTABLY. I nearly got run down on the sidewalk today by a biker coming off the street suddenly. Then, on the way home, a lady blew thru a four-way stop in front of my car and I could have easily hit her had I not reacted so quickly.

I was not pleased. And yes, I'm one of those bike-like-a-car folks. I'm going to stop ranting here. But the point stands. Ride predictably, and sensibly.

I have been meaning to bring this up but yeah, I have noticed the same thing, especially during the Shadyside portion of my commute in the evening. I have been riding behind or passing a lot more bikes recently.

I saw a kid on Forbes coming from Craig st towards CMU ride casually between the two lanes of cars stopped at the red on the LEFT side of the road, and without a helmet. I've actually seen a lot of people ride up the left side of the road on that stretch, which has no shoulder.

I think there needs to be more work done to make sure people riding bikes know how to properly ride in the city. Especially college kids who may not have ever lived in an urban environment or foreigners who don't understand that, sadly, cars rule the road in these parts.

Perhaps there is a flyer that could be printed out and one day we could get a bunch of people together to stand around and hand them out to people riding by?

I saw a mom taking their child to school on an xtracycle in the Regent Square area this morning.

sounds like a job for our brand new, hot-off-the- presses, illustrated Bike Commuting 101 guide. Pick one up at Hothouse this weekend. We should also get them to the Universities next week.

Keerist. I saw two cyclists zooming down the sidewalk on Fifth Ave against traffic, nearly run down two pedestrians, shoot out into the crosswalk during the walk cycle and turn left down Craig St. Meanwhile, another cyclist ran the red light on Craig St (through the walk cycle, so not dangerous just rude) and turned left onto the 5th Ave sidewalk nearly colliding with one of the first two, and a second cyclist followed her through the red but continued down Craig St.

I'm afraid I'm going to become a hater :(

If you take up the mantle of pessimism, it actually makes your life more pleasant. I don't get upset when I see people do stupid things (because I expect this), and I'm gobsmacked when I see someone Do The Right Thing.

I work at Geneva College, up in Beaver Falls and we've had freshman bring the most bicycles that any staff member can remember. They're in the hallways and basements of dorms, and filling bicycle racks all over campus. It's quite a feat considering that last year was already a great year, where the bike racks were constantly overflowing. It'll be interesting in the coming week to see what happens when the returning students arrive.
