new roads and routes

New to me anyway. I've learned some from people on this board.

Ages ago, Mark R. recommended Mossfield as a scenic route from Penn Ave to East Liberty Boulevard. I finally tried it this morning. Nice road! Thanks Mark.

Yesterday I rode up Brown/Beulah/Thornberry as recomended by the collective and by Sarah Q. Beforehand I was critical -- I figured it had significantly more altitude gain than most of the alternatives and was probably just another busy road. Wrong! Gradual ascent alongside a stream, very very nice. Thanks Sarah.

For my part, I've got a bikely link now to my current favorite route to and from McKeesport. Out through West Mifflin, back through Turtle Creek &c, various little tricky roads included. (Do not reverse, the two bridges are both crappy in the other direction, and the view from Skyline is only good southward)

I'll wave to you on the road!

I've explored a few Oakland to McKeesport routes, but I've never tried Ravine ST/Greensprings/Homesville/Skyline, etc. I'll ahve to give it a whirl.

Mostly I go out and back on 837. Through Duquesne, I take 2nd Ave and Patterson. Both Patterson and the end of 2nd that intersects it are closed. You have to watch for broken glass (very little, considering), but the traffic is great!

This is an OK route right now (June 2009) because 837 has a lane blocked off to traffic between Patterson and the bridge.

I saw that there is a ramp that clims up to the trail bridge between Mck and Duquesne, but I did not see if there was a way to access it.

Is there any schedule for the trail between Homestead and McKeesport? The ...um...stuff... with Sandcastle shouldn't affect this section of the trail and for convenience it would be nice to avoid teh 500 ft or so climb.

Since you are a bit familliar with the territory (or parts of it at least), any thoughts on getting from Monroeville (near pitcairn) to Whitehall (by caste village)?

Thanks in advance.

Not familiar enough I'm afraid. Very interesting question though! With Braddock Ave/TBE out, it looks like the Rankin Bridge won't work. How is Mosside Blvd/Jacks Run? I've never ridden it, gonna have to give it a try. On the other side, is there any way to avoid Lebanon-Church Road?

Those are all of my questions exactly. I'm familiar getting across by car, hoping to start riding across soon, but would like to avoid roads like lebanon-church, not really the safest place to be riding.

Nate -- glad my return route worked for you since your outbound suggestion via Woodstock got me there. Route karma. :)

From the east to caste village =

Triboro or alternate to rankin bridge.

837 until sandcastle.

find your way paralleling the main roads heading

away from teh rivers along the tech buildings.

Go under one eventually onto Streets Run Rd.

Follow, making right at 4 way stop sign to stay on.

Cross tracks, make left and go up crossing 51.

Stay straight until T with brownsville.

Right on brownsville. Stay on this until 4 way

with light where right is brownsville, left is

down to caste village and straight goes towards

the tubes.

Does this make any sense?

Steevo's route is cool...however, I'd add "take care crossing the seven sets of crappy railroad tracks on Streets Run".

Love that road, hate the tracks...

Thanks! That does make sense. Thought the best route would take me toward sandcastle, but didn't know where to go from there. not too familiar with the "side" streets. I'll give it a whirl as soon as I feel up to the ride.

I looked at google maps. Its called "baldwin rd"

and apparently the bottom of streets run is also

called baldwin rd? then again they call the

birmingham "brady st bridge" which was torn down

before i was born.

Also when you get out to suburbia, depending

on which side of caste you want to be on (i sent

you baptist down to caste) but if you want to be

up toward cool springs and all that stuff, you

can cut down onto macanulty to one of the women's

named streets to gardenville. That cuts out

the rush of that section of baptist (which

is going to suck climbing back up to brownsville).

you can also take doverdell or whatevr up through

neighborhoods to connect through.

The south hills are awful.

Thanks, the baptist side is what I'll want, I'm going to Weyman Rd. Now I just need to find a way around the tri-boro / braddock closure. The detour they have set up would be a pain by bike.

I was riding on the Tri-boro this morning to get the feel of it and had some guy beep and stick his tongue out at me. I think he was just jealous 'cause he wasn't on a bike :-)

Its not a bad ride, the streets through Pitcairn suck, pot holes and thick mud/rocks on the sides of the road, o well...

google must've gotten their data from the city. it would not surprise me if they haven't updated it. but then again, someone had to have done the data entry on it somewhere.

well, I did it. I made the trek from Monroeville to Caste Village. It wasn't too bad. The only place I got a little nervous was crossing the Rankin bridge. I rode in the middle of the lane to prevent passing, but they passed me anyway in the other lane. Sandcastle doesn't seem to care about riding through their parking lot. There was a guard sitting there and he didn't even look up at me. The trail through the waterfront was more bumpy than any of the roads I was on...
