nice things port authority drivers have done for you

inspired by sloaps comment in the other thread, how 'bout nice things that bus drivers have done.

one time i was in sewickley, and i was there with no lights, and it got dark, so i decided to take the bus with a bike rack home (the line is supposed to have one). a bus showed up around 9pm, and lo and behold, no rack. i explained to the driver my situation, and he let me take the bike onto the bus. what a nice dude. i was also the only person on the bus, but whatever, he didn't have to do that.

thanks bus dude!

yesterday I was approaching a green light at an intersection and the bus coming the opposite direction looked as though he was going to go left in front of me, but then he saw me and didn't go left until after I passed.

I gots one.

Last week, I was waiting at a bus stop, and a bus (NOT the one I was waiting for, so I didn't flag it) pulled over, and asked me which bus I was waiting for. When I told him, he said he didn't think that bus used this stop anymore, and suggested I get on his bus. I rode with him for the next few blocks, when he let me off and pointed me in the direction of the correct bus stop.

(I know, not really a bike-related story, but it was pretty nice of the guy. I could've been standing there for hours in the rain otherwise).

Similar to catherine, I don't have a bike-related story, but I'd like to give a shout out to the drivers who, when they see me running for the bus, will actually wait for me. Or, like happened one time, I wasn't to the stop all the way, but the driver stopped and let me on where I was.

Doesn't always happen, so thought I'd put that out there.

My morning commute always involves a bus when I bike. When I first started in late August the 500 that is supposed to be a bike route came about once a week without a rack. Each time they didnt have a rack I called. I then realized that the bus that came before the 500 went the same way I was going for most of its route. So then I would jump on that one if it had a rack and if it didnt, I would just wait for 500 and probably only got skunked once after I started doing that. Then a new driver started and he didnt have a rack and I was like "you dont have a rack, ill just wait for the 500" and he told me I could bring it on the bus as it doesnt get too filled until after my stop. So from that point if the first bus doesnt have a rack I bring the bike on the bus. So a few months later the driver switched (as they do every quarter) and on the last week of his route the driver told me that he already talked to the next driver and he said it was cool if i bring the bike on the bus if no rack. So the new driver has actually been folding up the handicapped seat on the bus for me before he gets to my stop if there is no rack. I have not been riding PAT alot and have experience with a few drivers, but these two have been the nicest by far!!! Erok, I think this is a good thread to spread the positives as well!

After a Critical Mass ride a year or so ago, I tried riding the railbed between Millvale and the 62nd Street Bridge. Of course, I got a flat. It was getting dark, and I was 8 miles from home.

I limped into Etna, hoping to get a 1D Mount Royal, which would get me to about a mile from home. Of course, the first 1D to come along was rack-less. My shoulders must have visibly sagged as I realized this, because he stopped and asked me if I had a problem before I could say a word. He suggested I bring the bike on, and got me 7 long miles before it got too dark. Whew!

I was coming in saxonburg one day in the pouring rain. it was like 50 degrees and just dumping rain. A bus slowed next to me, opened his door and asked if I wanted to put my bike on the rack. Pretty nice jesture.
