North Shore Pedestrian Bridge - Public Meeting

There's a cross over interest among some on this board into pedestrian accessibility, so I hope it's ok to post this here:

Allegheny Avenue and Reedsdale Street Pedestrian Bridge Project

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration

(FHWA) invite you to attend an open house public meeting to discuss the Allegheny Avenue and

Reedsdale Street Pedestrian Bridge Project. An overview of the project will be presented through

a display of plans and renderings. No formal presentation will be made, however; members of the

design team will be on hand to answer questions about the project and gather feedback.

Date: November 10, 2010

Time: 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm

Place: Foerster Student Service Center, 2nd Floor

CCAC, Allegheny Campus

808 Ridge Avenue

One major use of the North Shore Connector will be CCAC Allegheny students to and from. Crossing that area on foot is tricky on a nice day in the sun. Add darkness, heavy traffic, rain and/or snow, and it becomes very difficult indeed.

The new Allegheny station will be elevated. It's already visibly taking shape, if you want to take a run/ride/drive over there. Getting from that station to anyplace else will require an elevated solution, partly to not have people get killed, partly not to gum up motor traffic from all the pedestrians.

My mantra is and always has been, anything but the car. Anything that makes alternatives to the car possible and even desirable, the answer is "Yes!" Whatever shape this takes, if it delays or nullifies a decision to acquire a car to get over to that part of town, definitely build it.

Is this the ugly ped bridge that goes from the Heinz lofts to Penn Brewery? If so, that's a great bike connection too and if anything should be enhanced to better accommodate both modes.

Thanks for posting this, Sara!

Allegheny Avenue and Reedsdale Street meet at the NW corner of Heinz Field. It's getting a new T station, as Stu mentions.
