Off Topic: Urban Forest Film Fest! Wed. April 20th
this is totally off topic, and if it isn't cool to promote it here, I understand if the moderator's remove this thread! But, I organized a short, one-evening film festival about trees and people this wednesday at the kelly strayhorn!

Doors open at 6:30pm, films begin at 7pm
Suggested donation $5. Bike Racks outside!

Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai Lisa Merton & Alan Dater
Taking Root tells the story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize. In response to rural women’s problems stemming from a degraded environment, Maathai suggested they plant trees. Starting with this simple act, these women worked successively against deforestation, poverty and violent political oppression until they became a uniting force that helped to bring down Kenya’s 24-year dictatorship. Taking Root follows Maathai’s courageous and inspiring thirty-year journey to safeguard the environment, protect human rights and defend democracy.

the film about her is really amazing. if you read her memoir it covers a lot of those things--she has been arrested a few times in kenya!
