The first “suburban” Open Streets in Pittsburgh will be held on Saturday, October 17th, 2015 from 9 AM to 1 PM, in Brentwood. Over a mile of Brownsville Road will be closed down and transformed into an open space for recreational activities for participants to explore by walking, biking, running, skating, exercising, dancing, shopping, as well as children’s activities, socializing, and much, much more. https://www.facebook.com/events/400057890200181/

@fultonco & I will probably be coordinating a bike ride from either Downtown or from South Side then up 18th street to Brentwood to attend this (details TBD), but I wanted to get this out early so folks could pencil in the date if interested.

I mentioned this at the Walk Bike Ross meeting last night. They are seriously interested to see how another suburb plans on pulling this off.

It'd be a bit crazy but under just the right conditions I'd consider coming out with the kids on the train. I've been looking for an excuse to go over mount Washington. it would, however, require a very high degree of patience on south 18th street and I don't want to seriously annoy a bunch of people who might perceive it as a stunt.

my first thought was It's Brentwood. "Open streets" might mean they let black people drive through without harassing them.

@byogman - You can't take the train to Brentwood. That's 51 Carrick territory. South 18th St is about a mile and a half of 5% grade, then another 250 feet of climbing after getting south of Arlington. We took Critical Mass out S.18th/Brownsville last year. It was quite cyclist hostile. [blog post]

@stu, pretty sure he meant the biketrain, his tandem with tandem trailer you might've seen at the try-a-bike last weekend.... agreed, though, that 18th is pretty rough---doable but _very_ long---and the alternatives aren't so pleasant, either.

I wonder if you could do something like this at night, in conjunction with something like Squirrel Hill night market? That would be pretty sweet.

@emma It will be great having you along. At one point in time, some from the Flock 412 group were considering joining us also. I hope we have a big group riding into the event.

I have a nine to noon commitment myself, so the best I can hope for is to meet you all for a send off. Take lots of notes and pictures, okay?

https://youtu.be/SmBXj-iRhzw Short video (3:32) of the Open Streets in Brentwood, yesterday. I thought it was a success and the people who came out really enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Marko82, Rusty Red, and Buffalo for coming out to the ride. Thick Bikes and Pro Bikes also came and set up tents. EDS - Greg Jones and Stephanie Miller and the Brentwood Borough Staff did a great job organizing the event. Rich Fitzgerald was there, riding his bike around, for quite a while also. We saw several neighboring Police Departments on hand to help out and check the event out. Perhaps we'll see more of these events in suburban communities in the future.
