pedaling to d.c.

my son and i, who is age ten, and an exceptional cyclist, are beginning to plan a ride to washington d.c. on the trail to celebrate his eleventh birthday. ride will commence on thursday, 4 october. first day, day one, is ohiopyle. friday will be a day of hanging out, rafting, etc. the next stopover will be harper's ferry. our goal is to ride into d.c. midday on the 10th, which is his birthday. we are hopeful to interest a few folks, perhaps other children, to accompany us. we will be camping and staying in b and b's. i haven't flushed out any details as of yet.

I hope you have a great time. Your son must be a strong rider to ride from Ohiopyle to DC in 3 1/2 days (unless I misread your post -- you're planning to take a day off in Harper's Ferry, right?) That's pretty ambitious.

I wouldn't underestimate the roughness of the C&O canal trail. It's really in bad shape. It's worth choosing a bike with some suspension, if you have one.

I've done this ride with my kids both ways, once camping and once in B&Bs. It's nice either way, though I preferred camping myself since there's less pressure to make a certain destination each day.

In Cumberland you might check out the Inn at Walnut Bottom -- I've liked it both times I stayed there.
