Okay, so the ELB/Negley assault thread has me thinking maybe I should get some pepper spray after all - where's a good place to get it? What are the laws here concerning the stuff?
As with most things in life, you could purchase it online. As far as locally, I can't remember exactly where, but someone told me there was a place in the Strip that sells it. I've been meaning to replace mine after having it confiscated while visiting a high school- forgot to remove it from my keychain. Go figure!

Brand doesnt really matter, what matters is heat level, binding agent, and dye. The higher heat levels cant be sold in some states like new york. the binding agent makes it stick to the person more and the dye makes them identifiable.
Amazon has them ranging form 5$ on up. The keychain size is 1/2 oz usually, and the 20z size is about 1x1x4inch. the 1/2 size is good for about 4-5 shots.
I'm going to disagree that brand doesn't matter. Just like anything else there are cheap versions of things that just don't work well. Fox Labs is a well known brand and will work when you need it to. A slightly cheaper, but good, brand is HALT. I would also suggest purchasing the stream spray version, not the cone fog. The stream will allow you to hit something a little further away without getting it all over yourself.
I didnt mean ignore brand, perhaps I stated it wrong. I also use and would recommend fox labs, but looking at the heat level and concentration of the formulation is more important than brand alone.
I was thinking of also purchasing pepper spray. I also got into a couple confrontations when biking and thought I might get physically attacked.Does it work if you hit them anywhere on the body or just in the face?? Just someone seeing that I have the spray might immediately turn them away
netviln, I agree completely + 1 formulation, fox is the brand to buy.
The spray needs to get into the eyes, nose, or throat to be effective.
Watch wind conditions and bystanders, too.
It would truly suck to try to use it, and either dose yourself or catch someone other than the assailant.
I have no experience with the stuff, but have used the squirty wasp & hornet spray a couple of times. Is that a good analogy? That stuff can be aimed somewhat reliably out to maybe 10 feet. Bystanders aren't a problem, but blowback sure is, as is missing the target.
