Pittsburgh, a year round cycling community - finally!

I know that manjy of you have been riding year round for - well, a long time. I don't mean to slight any of you when I say that I think this might be the year that the general public recognizes that cycling is a year round activity. As I made my way through downtown to the office this morning, I spotted five cyclists. The first one to catch my eye was a guy on a folding bike coming from the North Side. Within seven blocks, I spotted four more cyclists and three parked bikes. Just as I spotted the first bike (the folder) I heard the radio announce the temperature. It was a near frigid 14 degrees. Kudos to all of you out there this morning. You really are transforming this City. Hopefully I'll run into a few of you at the Icycle Bicycle Event on New Years morning.

This has been hitting me similarly since fall, sort of in little vignettes. In early November, I was headed out the parkway east [by car :( ] in the late afternoon, and a pack of 4, apparently otherwise unrelated commuting cyclists were headed across the 10th st bridge to the South Side, they were taking their lane, and the cars were in the second lane. It really hit me, now we're gettin' somewhere.

Icycle Bicycle! Whoo, hoo!

I'm discovering the joys of winter riding myself - I rode every day this month but one when I took the bus because I was going out after work. My coworkers are still riding too.

I got fenders, gloves, earmuffs, and a windbreaker with cinching sleeves - seems to do the trick...

agreed with the rest of you.

I have only been riding every day for around a year and a half and already there is a noticeable bump in the amount of riders I see when it's really cold.

Good job everyone!

I have continued to ride the uni in the winter. The good side is it has helped me improve on balance skill sets. The bad side is now there is no doubt in my neighbors mind I am somewhat crazy but I think of myself as droll

Do you use a studded tire on the uni?

No it is a 36 inch tire so they don't make one but it is a new tire. What I have learned is how to counter act the loss of traction in a turn but.. fall down 6 times get up seven

Have you considered making a DIY studded tire?
