Pittsburgh bike infrastructure 2017

At the BikePgh annual meeting on 11/14, Kristin Saunders of the Pittsburgh City Planning department put out two maps and asked people for input on bicycle infrastructure. First map: Vote for 3 projects that should be given priority, with a list of intersection repair ideas and key connections (e.g. Junction Hollow Trail to Panther Hollow Lake, Glenwood Bridge, West End Bridge, etc). Some of the good or surprising trails and lanes drawn in orange:
  • Saw Mill Run - yes! (is anyone working on this?)
  • Hazelwood Trail all the way to Glenwood Bridge - yes! (ditto)
  • Brilliant Branch Bridge upstream of Highland Park Bridge - yes!
  • West Carson Street to McKees Rocks - but PennDOT just screwed that
  • Allegheny Green Boulevard through Lawrenceville - didn't AVR scuttle that idea?
  • Bigelow Blvd from downtown to Oakland - an odd idea
  • Forbes, downtown to Oakland - but only partial?
  • Fifth, downtown to Oakland - but only partial?
Looking at my photo, Smithfield St Bridge (and Ramp) and West End Bridge got many votes for improvement. https://flic.kr/p/NRj5Bs https://flic.kr/p/PmyUfh Second map, below, asked: Where do you get on the trails? A simpler question. Smithfield Bridge and Eliza Furnace eastern lot got many votes. https://flic.kr/p/PmyUuA https://flic.kr/p/NRj5w7

Isn't the brilliant bridge technically in Aspinwall on one side?  And it is a railroad bridge. Is it still in use?  It runs right into Aspinwall Riverfront Park and the new Riverfront development. But on the other side would dump out onto Allegheny River Blvd at a weird spot, right?  Or does it dump out into that Pgh owned yard leading to the lock?

If you are on Washington Blvd travelling toward the highland park bridge, there is a little driveway to the right going up the hill maybe across from the cycle track or the parking lot where the LARPers play with swords. On satellite view there is a bldg up there. Any idea what that is?

You mean this site? The county real estate site suggests it's owned by the city, and part of Highland Park (meaning the park, not the neighborhood). That access road from Washington Blvd crosses the RR tracks and connects to it. In the aerial view it's got a few small buildings and some orderly rows of various somethings, can't tell what. Maybe it's a park maintenance facility?

I'm pretty sure that site is the Pittsburgh Police Firing Range.  At least what Steven linked to. If you go up that access road, you'll see signs for it.

That's it.  That's why i can hear gunshots in Aspinwall sometimes.  thanks.   What else is up there besides the abandoned tracks?

It may be more than you think because London city is actually quite small. Like Boston. I'm pretty sure Khan is mayor over the tiny London, not what people think of as London.

According to Wikipedia, he's mayor of Greater London (I checked before doing my calculation).

I learned something new tonight. (:. Was hoping we could use that as an argument to jack up the number higher. (:
