Pittsburgh to Kitanning route advice?

I come up with this but I'm only familiar with the first 5 and last 5 miles.

In particular, there's a stretch of rt 909 heading into Lower Burrell that looks unpleasant.

I'm happier with Lincoln/Verona/Saltsburg out of town to Hulton than Frankstown-which as a LOT more traffic. There is a fair amount of climbing but nothing terribly steep. From there Hulton down to Milltown and Kerr is just fine and nice up and down riding. Coxcomb Hill down from Kerr is very steep and fast. Big trucks at times.

I've ridden the stretch from the end of Logan's Ferry into Lower Burrell more often. It's not that bad in the morning, though a friend of mind referred to it as "mean stretch of road" once in that a lot of people beep at you. I haven't been on the stretch out of Lower Burrell.

This route would be hilly. Have you conisdered Freeport Road all the way to Freeport?

That would add a few miles, but I'm familiar with Freeport Rd. If you think it's better riding (on a Saturday afternoon) than the south side of the river, then that's what I'll do.

I guess I'm more familiar with it as a route out that far.

I ride mostly in the mornings out that way so I'm not sure what it would be like a Saturday afternoon--the south route might be slightly less traffic heavy.

Frankstown is going to have a lot of cars though.

This is the Lincoln route I've used:

that is the MOST DIRECT route for sure.

If i were riding it...

Blackadore UP to mt carmel to lincoln

(stoked to see google knows the 3rd st to poketa)!!!

Why does google not have SR numbers? I think out of

New Ken you are told to go on 56. I dont think this is the best road that way. I thin it is a divided 2 lane 50mph rd. I would literally never ride this. There are lots of amazing (oscar 3 star roads) to the right of this.

f it. take freeport to ford city, cross the bridge

then backtrack 3 miles. Super flat(until tartentum then it rolls) and safe.

41 miles via ford city.

20% longer but probably 15% faster due to the lack of BIG hills.

steevo--I've been looking at going beyond Freeport but haven't yet. Is it better to take Ford City road or take 128 up to Cadogan-Slate Lick road or does it matter. Is one appreciably hillier than the other?

Lyle, I'd go with @steevo's routing because he knows.

But, if you wanted to go up through the hills (and it will be hills) an alternative to SR 56 would be to turn left on 7th street just into Lower Burrel and then Right up (a differnt) Freeport Road. Climb up and over, straight across Tarentum Bridge Road becoming Leechburg Rd, Edgecliff, and then Garver's Ferry Road. Garver's Ferry is a very nice road.

i have ridden this (actually a good deal beyond kittanning) 3 times in the last 2 months... it's a pretty easy ride, and i've tried it a few ways, the best way from my experience so far is cross the river at highland park and get on freeport rd, take it all the way to trenetum. after trenetum start to hug the river (but don't go under the rail tressle into the park) on 1st ave/river ave and just follow it around (the is the best part of the ride, little traffic, decent road, riding through little towns and a cool scrap yard and some big industrial complexes), eventually you'll come to a switchback that is brutal and short at the dead end of the road, you'll climb up that and it will take you to a crazy downhill into freeport, cruise through freeport and then a little ways out of town you'll hit 128 into ford city, this road is great, through farm country, rolling hills, i handled it ok fully loaded on a single speed but you could really cruise through here on a geared bike, there are no tricky turns or anything, just keep going, eventually you'll hit the bridge, cross the river and immediately on the other side there is a rail-trail that you can follow all the way to kittanning.

this is a great ride! have fun, feel free to ask me any questions if you have them.

the only alternate route that i haven't tried is crossing the river @ new kin and taking leechburg rd to leechburgh... if this is relatively flat it would be the best way, you can pick up a rail trail shortly after you hit leechburg that will take you all the way to kittanning... if you want to take one for the team and try that out for me i'd appreciate it ;)

one of the routes I have taken is to go from Sewickley up to Mars over to Saxonburg and then onto Yellowdog which leads you into Worthington where you can follow old 422 into West Kittanning.

The ride is a little hilly sometimes especially on the outskirts of worthington and you go through some seedy areas but pretty enjoyable overall.

If you do decide to go freeport road, they are building a turnpike bridge in harmarville and they do have an upcoming weekend where freeport rd will be closed (im not sure if it is theis weekend or next). You may be able to squeeze your way past, but if not the detour will be pretty easy. left on 910, right onto Gulf Lab road, right onto russelton rd/ pearl ave.

Thanks for all the tips. As it happened, I was unable to make the trip last weekend, but I'll try one of these routes in the future.
